Damn, you launch one rocket and the haters just pour out of the woodworks. Anyone who doesn't understand the impact of a space program needs to be sent to basic science class and/or have their head examined.
Edit: Just as an fyi, here is a very interesting reddit thread on this issue - !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

I Argued with someone about the value of space research. The were in the middle of getting GPS directions with their smartphone while telling me how worthless it is.
I. Shit. You. Not.

Rockets are naturally cool. You'd be out of your mind to hate on them. Or psychopathic-ally religious I suppose.

India launched a rocket today on a Mars mission. And instantly come the news articles stating that when a country has millions of poor people, why does it need a space program (that is all of $1b) and nuclear weapons (yeah, china is a neighbour on one side and pakistan on another!).

I saw a picture a while ago from a news channel where they were interviewing a JPL guy about space exploration. They asked if space exploration was relevant or something along those lines and he replied "Well, let me just say I'm very glad to be coming to you live via satellite"

Ah. To be fair, those sorts of stories come out whenever America launches any space missions as well. :|
People are short sighted in the extreme.

30% of people living below the poverty line. Caste system. Bride burning, etc., etc.
LOL LOOK AT OUR ROCKET SHIP WE'RE GOIN' TO MARS!!!!!
edit: Harsh? Yeah, but c'mon.

That's a special kind of retarded.

Lol. Harsh? yes. That is reality. Stupid? Yes. Because it isnt a zero sum game. And because that argument is made without knowing how much money is being spent to fight those things that are constantly brought up as things money is rather better spent on.

Does this rocket run on bhut jolokia curry?

And if India spent all of that money on the poor instead of in space, then merely 29.99999999% of the population would be below the poverty line. You don't advance a society by putting them on welfare.

Ah that's right - you do it through space travel. My bad.

Yes, because scientific advancements have never brought about social change. That's why the civil rights movement in the US didn't occur during the Space Race.

Words cannot express how that makes me feel. Only a picture can.

I've had a very entertaining debate about religion whilst being driven in a car by someone following GPS directions. They tried to use the 'the theory of relativity can't be proven' argument whilst doing so...

I would rather see them doing this rather than continuing to enhance their nuclear arsenal. Still though, a little work on their infrastructure would go a long way.

I'm sure they will once China and Pakistan do.
![]() 11/05/2013 at 15:14 |

Probably Pakistan more than China.

They've won wars against Pakistan but lost one against China. China, definitely.

Yes, but the hate seems to go deeper with Pakistan rather than with China, at least it seems that way when looking at it as an outsider.

You can hate one while being afraid of the other :)
