And people wonder why I don't want to skydive...
They are VERY lucky, especially the people in the plane that broke up.

My sister had a friend who's parachute failed to open correctly. Her funeral was a closed casket, I'm never skydiving.

blah blah blah something about jumping out of a perfectly good airplane etc. etc.
Me neither. Never.

Holy sweet jesus it's just like GTA. Actually, it's kinda worse than GTA.
I'll reiterate my usual position on this: no thanks.

This might as well be one of the over-the-top cutscenes from Call of Duty.....thats amazing though, I'm sure the FAA is going to be up in somebody's ass....

I understand the inherent thrills/adrenaline rush people get from this. I can get them doing other things like rock climbing and other sports though that do not have such a huge downside WHEN something fails.
Just no. It ain't the height, it is that sudden stop.

when I used to skydive , we would joke about "if something happens to the plane above 1000 feet , i'm getting out". i'm very glad I never had to deal with this situation .

Although in this case, they were jumping out of a not-perfectly-good-airplane :D

I'm pretty sure a rock climber and skydiver make fairly equivalent splats on the ground if something goes wrong.

Well, technically, if they were just up there enjoying the sights, things would not have gone so well.

Nah, unless you are talking about sport or free climbers.
The worst fall for someone climbing is the distance they are from their protection or attachment point. A factor two fall is double that, so if you were run out like ten feet, you could fall 20 and come to the end of your rope, which has elasticity. It sucks, you can break a bone and get really scraped up but most of the time that is it.
Falling out of the sky? No upside.

But you did mention "when something fails" so we can't rely on safety ropes :)

I will take my chances climbing. There are more safety factors involved and I am much closer to the ground. There have been a few accidents but nothing fatal. One unwritten rule is that if someone falls hard enough to require evacuation, other climbers will pitch in and lower them or help carry them out to where an ambulance/helicopter can get them. They then divide up the person's gear amongst themselves.
Even the higher risk climbs like Yosemite (The Nose, El Capitan) experience deaths rarely. A coworker parachutes, and did BASE jump a few times. That stuff is flat out as crazy as a shithouse rat.
If you fall climbing, there are other people around, you might slide a bunch and grab onto something, or fall to a lower ledge also. In the sky getting help seems much more problematic. More downside there. Maybe because I am older now and the adrenaline rush isn't so necessary?
