Article from !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

If you’re a fan of the current Toyota GT86 — Subaru BRZ and Scion FRS as it is in the states, you’ve undoubtedly heard of sedan rumors. Now, just a hours away from the Dubai International Motor Show, rumors seemed to have peaked that Toyota will be revealing the GT86 Sedan Concept for all of the world to see.

According to an !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , the GT86 sedan has been given the green light. The go-ahead. The — you get it.

When I hear the rumors of another sedan being added to Toyota’s already dense line-up the only question the world should be asking is “WHY?”. Toyota already has the Avalon, Camry, Matrix and the Corolla. The latter of which has just been unseated as the best selling car in it’s class by the Honda Civic. If the Honda is doing something right with the Civic, perhaps Toyota should take notice and beat them at their own game. Is Toyota planning a Civic Si fighter? No.

If any of the rumor is true, the GT86 Sedan would use the same GT86 Coupe chassis, only lengthened 100mm for increased rear leg room. Perhaps they add in some new Hybrid R powertrain. We’ve also heard of KERS technology possibly finding it’s way in the mix.

My guess is that Toyota has set aim on the sport sedan market. Specifically, delivering a blow to the Germans. I can already see the front page of auto rags in the news stands: Cadillac ATS v BMW 320i v Toyota GT86 Sedan

I don't like the idea of a GT86 sedan.

It's a sports car. It shouldn't be given 4 doors.

It's planning a Carolla fighter. That's right, because they will really share the same segment. A sedan with that little power and more weight than the toyobaru twins won't even touch 3-seires territory. And that's only performance, not considering interior quality.

I don't mean to be striking down your post, I'm just super sick of hearing about anything 86.

Furthermore, the GT86 should only come in these flavors:

Convertible or Coupe, NA and turbo offerings of the same engine. Nothing else. 4 permutations. End of line.

Definitely not. It just, sadly, doesn't have the power to even be considered a rival to those cars.

I love the 86, but it's something completely different.

Does the current coupe compete with the 3 series coupe/4 series? I believe those BMWs fill completely different niches. As such I don't think adding two doors to the coupe will suddenly move it into the same segment of the 4-door 3-series.

There isn't much competition for a GT86 sedan. If the interior is anything like the FRS, it's on the same luxury scale as the Civic Si sedan. And that's plenty find for most people. I for one love the idea of a rear wheel drive performance sedan if obtainable at a fraction of the cost of a new 3 series.

This is getting down right absurd.

A BMW 3-series competitor?

Are you insane, (author)?

Toyota already has the Lexus IS/Altezza, already has the RWD Auris overseas... and the Lexus GS.

They don't need to have subaru build them a BMW fighter for half the retail price point, with a 2L 200hp engine, that won't compete with BMW anyway, other than being lighter than BMW cars have been as of late.

This sort of speculation just makes the people speculating look like they don't know what they are really talking about. RWD is not the great equalizer that makes all RWD cars equivalent.

NA flat-4 base.

NA flat-6, or turbo flat-4 as a power upgrade.

I would prefer the sweeter, smoother, better balanced, less complex H6, especially at 3.4L and 340hp, myself. FA20DIT can't quite hit that target as easily.

The GT86 fanboyism has reached catastrophic level. People are delusional if they think the GT86s, in coupe or sedan form, are bmw competitors. Come on guys. It's not even on BMW's radar

I am for this. A 3 series is no substitute for a real sports car, but the GT-86 is really a 2 seater. Really, they should have given this a 3.0-4.0L flat 6 and made it the new IS, but maybe that will come later. In any case, the low center of gravity and dynamics of a real sports car combined with real 4 seater practicality at a price normal people can afford is a concept that is long overdue. I actually started a 3D concept of one in Blender, never finished it though.

This would have been more expensive and in a higher performance segment but the concept is the same. Take a sports car, stretch it out and make it a legit 4 seat 4 door car. Why nobody has done this yet is beyond me.

this is just going to be a rear-wheel-drive, boxer-powered corolla, if you think of it.

THIS. IS. GONNA. BE. AWESOME. except for ONE THING:

toyota's gonna price it upmarket from the corolla, otherwise people are going to completely stop buying corollas. price will be the prohibition, and that's going to suck.

I'm all for this. A sedan could mean longer wheelbase. Longer wheelbase can mean wagon. It would be great to see small RWD's in the Toyota lineup again.
