The legendary Peking to Paris Rally presents a real test of endurance for historic and vintage cars. 96 cars from 26 countries competed this year travelling half way around the world from the starting point at the Great Wall of China to the finishing point at Place Vendome, Paris.

The event covered 7,610 miles in 33 days, including 620 miles of punishing Time Trials. It is widely regarded as one of the toughest rallies of its kind.

Our Chairman, Peter Lovett and his friend Tim Smith (co-driver) participated in their 1965 Porsche 911. The Peking to Paris Rally saw Peter and Tim travel across the Gobi Desert in Mongolia and then on to Russian back roads to Ukraine, Slovakia, Austria, Switzerland and, eventually, France.

Peter and Tim completed the rally in 237h:49m:22s and finished second place overall. They also won 15 out of 16 stages in the European section of the rally.

Well done Peter and Tim!

You'll have to "borrow it from an anonymous friend" but you really need to watch the excellent 4-part series produced by Nat Geo Australia of the 2005 recreation using the same model cars as the 1907 rally.

It's simply astounding they were able to make it that far in 1907.

I'd absolutely love to do this rally. Maybe in a Triumph 2500, although any of the following would be just as good:

Rover P6, Triumph Stag, MGB GT V8, Jaguar XJC, Alfetta saloon, Triumph GT6, Fiat Dino or a Chevy Corvair.

I just want to do this. Period. I don't care what I would have to drive.

Thinking the beetle may be the best answer for this trip. Not as nice as a 911 but probably easier to fix on the side of a road in Mongolia.

If you are familiar with them they are not really any more difficult. That rally has a chase team anyway, stocked with parts relevant to the entrants. Fuel, support ect. is included in the rally, thats why its expensive. I don't want to ride in a beetle for five minutes, I did fix one in the middle of a Mexican desert once, someone needed some assistance.
