Having the paint flake off brand new headers that have only had 30 min of run time. Any tips on painting headers while they are installed on the car?

Time for ceramic-coated headers or invoke the warranty on the headers?

dayum, that picture's cool, you know whats annoying?, not having the tools, space and knowledge to do those type of things, the most difficult thing ive done to a car is taking off the stock live axle of a friends Mustang to replace it with an 8.8 LSD.

Er, I don't think the paint those came with was heat resistant. You need some VHT paint. Use newspaper and tape to block off the sides of the block. lift it high up to get to the bottom of the headers. Really no matter what you do the paint is going to flake off eventually. My headers are all rusted up now :(

that's not exactly amateur hour...

The VHT stuff is what is flaking off.

That seems harder than doing an engine swap...

Yeah ceramic coating time. ALL SPRAY header paint is crappy. No way around it scratching, or flaking or burning off.

well since i haven't made an engine swap before, i can't tell which would be more difficult, but i imagine its more complicated.

Just... just let it happen. There's no escape! I'm guessing that I have very simmilar budget headers on mine. The initial heat shock is the worst for them and takes away the most paint. Fast forward a couple of months and the majority of the paint is still there on mine.

What about header wrap. I will cover the header and provide a slight increase in power because it keeps the heat in which allows the flow through the header to increase.

It's quite ugly, does it work?

It does provide a modest gain in power.

Well, I dont want to say I told you so, so I wont. But header wrap might help. Only problem with that is, while it keeps moisture out, it also keeps moisture in too, and can lead to your exhaust eating itself from the inside out. I would say just throw some newspaper behind the header and spray some more paint on.
