Base price for a 435i M Sport - $50,575 with no options. That seems crazy expensive to me, that's C7 Vette money (I know thats not a direct comparison but still).

In 2006 the 330ci ZHP cost ~$38,000 with destination and no options. I know there is inflation but a $12.5k increase in 7 years seems extreme.

According to BMW the 435i gets to 60 in 5.0 seconds with the automatic and 5.3 with the manual. Car and Driver got the 330 ZHP to 60 in 5.6.

I guess I just expect more from a $50k car, and that I really really really miss the E46.

I agree, the cars these days are getting wayyyy too expensive. Its all the electronics and safety stuff.

You don't want one. Buy an E92 M3 and be done with it.

I wouldn't. There's something so much more special and unique about a straight six engine, especially BMW's gems. To me, a V8 engine is an unimaginative and generic way of making more power.

I am actually considering an E46 M3 in a few years to replace my 540i unless the BRZ gets forced-induction.

Then buy a low mileage E46 M3. It'll be better than this for half the price.

I've certainly considered it, but I already own an E46 330xi. While the M3 is certainly a huge step up, I would rather expand my car history beyond what I've already owned. I did notice a nice 01' Mercedes CL600 near me for sale for only $11,999. That would give me two straight six engines, and the $12K price tag not only reflects the purchase price, but the cost of yearly maintenance!

I have a bizarre hatred for Mercedes I can't really explain. I used to have an early E46 323i and I miss it dearly and greatly regret selling it. Man if I were you I would trade in the 330xi for a M3 no question. Even if you live in a snowy area just grab a decent set of snow tires, that's what I did with my E46.

That's way too 'cruiser' to be a coupe Id be interested in. It's very S5..no thanks. Hopefully the 2series hit the proportions better. Oh, and as far as the straight 6s go, I love em too, but haven't driven one as amazing as the s62 v8 from the e39 m5

Special and unique? I mean...if you're talking about the N52 maybe, but even that was the everyday workhorse 3 series engine. I owned an N54, and you're talking about a 435 with the N55. They're great if you like torque but you'll be underwhelmed at the top end. They're useless above 6k. If you don't think the S65 is either special or unique I'm not sure I'm doing any good by explaining this, but if you like classically revvy BMW engines the F30 is not the car for you.

I don't see how that picture would change my mind. I can find a V8 engine in damn near every type of vehicle on the road. Land yachts, trucks, vans, SUVs, crossovers, sports cars, super cars, luxury cars, and muscle cars. Their existence ranges from a $22K Ram 1500 to a $300K 458 Italia. It is a great engine configuration from an architecture and power standpoint, but I'm so hopelessly bored of everything having one. Unconventional straight six is unconventional.

How many cars have a straight six? There's BMW's 3.0, Volvo's 3.0, and Ram's 6.7. That's it. You just can't beat the silky smooth power delivery and great torque of a straight six.

Hard to get bored with 8 individual throttle bodies and an 8300 RPM redline.

I'm not disagreeing with you about the greatness of BMW's inline 6 (which they no longer serve up in NA form [sad face]), but one really can't question that the S85 and S85 are epic engines.

I think that is BMW's main point is to be a competitor to the Audi S5.

I've had my eyes set on the E39 M5 before but I have an E39 540 now and I kind of want a change of body style. I go 50/50 on the M5 and the M3

You're probably right. I'm hoping the 2series is more 'BMW' and less "chasing everyone else in circles" as the germans appear to be doing.

On the m5/m3...I LOVE both, but MAN the E46 felt pretty darn harsh in comparison to my E39. It'd be more fun for that 1 time a week or so, but not nearly as nice for the other 90% of the time. I think my next step with be a 4dr 6spd E92 M3...mmmmm

I agree with the 4-door E90 M3, I've always liked them over the E92 2-door.

However, it is too rich for my blood right now.

hang in there, they'll be coming down in price here soon lol. Or do what I did, find a cheapie on CL with a blown engine; rebuild said engine and have a great car WITH a fresh engine for .5 the cost of a decent used example.
