Ok, I get it, people don't like its styling and it's the automotive equivalent of a hair-shirt. Reading reviews of it in the press, though, it almost feels like the reviewers took the introduction of the new Mirage as a personal insult; as if Mitsubishi punched their girlfriends in the face and then called them fat.

After all the bile I've heard heaped on it, it makes me want to drive one and see for myself. I've driven a long list of utterly shitty cars in my life (1984 Renault Encore, 1980 Pontiac Phoenix, 2nd-gen Geo Metro, Ford Aspire, and so on), and I would find it very hard to believe this could be significantly worse than any of them. It has a bit of character, there's a surprising amount of standard equipment, and it's capable of 40+ mpg. I have an admitted weakness for bad cars (I have previously admitted that I kind of like the Dodge Caliber, for example), so that probably colors my perceptions a little.

It will probably be a sales dud here, because even if it's merely mediocre it comes on the market at a time when Americans have a surprisingly large selection of good small cars to choose from. The small car segment is no longer the empty wasteland that it used to be.

I still want to drive it, and see for myself.

Agreed. I was looking at some Ralliart wagons, and I looked over and thought, "What in the world is that?" Then I wanted to test drive it, but the salesman knew I wasn't super interested so he talked me out of it.

How were you able to live with yourself after having driven a Geo Metro?

It was just a rental car. I never owned one. However, I did own two of its predecessor, the Chevrolet Sprint. I loved both of them. The Sprint was lighter, so it didn't feel as slow as the Metro. It was still plenty slow, though.
Besides, I will drive any vehicle at any time if the opportunity presents itself. I want to experience the good AND the bad. I'm never going to say a car sucks unless I've actually experienced its suckiness first hand.
