I am investigating the possibility of swapping a volvo turbo motor and using a T5WC trans in my fox mustang. I keep seeing these sweet high powered volvos with RWD. Like this one.
Does anyone make an adapter for this?
Can the motors be made for RWD?
Is this idea stupid?

Probably.
Yes.
Nope, it's a brilliant idea. DO IT!

with fabrication skills and money, anything is possible

That would be interesting.
SBF swap would be worlds easier.

There is a direct adapter for the Mustang T-5 to the Volvo Redblock:

If you're looking to build a turbo DOHC Redblock I would suggest talking to Cameron at IPD
This is his turbo 16v wagon:

There is an amazing amount of info on turbobricks.com, thats where you should start.
All the vintage volvos are already RWD.

that is a rwd setup, no?

But not nearly as interesting or cool.

What about a Cosworth 2.3 ?

In the picture above that is NOT the 5 cylinder volvo motor. That is the Volvo-Penta AQ171 marine engine block pulled and put into a car. It is basicly a B230 dohc "redblock" motor just the marine version so it mounts upright instead of canted over like a standard B series engine and has an extra +1mm vlve lift cams and a slight stroke to 2.5 liters. This way they have more room for boost devices. If you want serious boost, a Redblock is the way to go for cheaper fun. The 5 cylinder motor is very good too and has prodigious power ability but has yet to even prove it's close to the older B engine durability. 5 bearings the size of diesel tractor bearings. The following video shows what can be done with just some light massaging. A 2.3 liter 8 valve sohc motor on about 22+psi boost = 430hp.
These can be even more evil as the one you pictured. that's (i'm assuming 2.5 liters) and a DOHC head wich was actually designed by Porsche and flows better stock than a hogged out 8v head. that engine as pictured above is WAY over 500hp. They have stroked them to 2.7+ liters and 800hp+. The T5 can be put on to a...T5 transmission yes but theres some specific bellhousings you have to find, and then some custom parts made. The 5 cylinder sounds nice as well but if your on a budget, theres many nice parts to make a 4 cylinder old faithful block sing nicely....and onto that a T5 transmission swap is an easy kit. So do the transmission for power handling....and dont build the power over 300 lbs torque. The T5 ttransmission will break. Find a T500 or T600 for the monster motor you want :)

I'm not sure you can tell if that is a penta or not just because it's mounted without the tilt, that's a common mod especially if you're swapping the tranny. The T-5 adapter I posted gives you the option of mounting flat or tilted. It could easily be a B234/B230 hybrid like I have my in my 242

Ahhh yes your right about that option. The best way to do that whole swap would be to get both a tranny and the penta motor. I mean what's not to like about it if you find the 2.5 stroker one with the higher lift cams.
I wish I still had my 242 in many ways....but I'm sure if I found it again or found a similar one I probably would have found myself to have moved on. It had seriously unreliable fuel delivery that scared me for life in owning an old 70's fuel injection car again....or any fuel injected car with age on it. I'll get over that some day.

Yes! I was just hoping someone like you would come out of the woodwork with some solid info. Thanks!
I don't want or need (at least now) a huge power house of a motor. I just want a light turbo motor and manual trans to keep the weight of the mustang down and about 300hp mostly for maximum funness and work some fools at stop lights. Anything at this point is better than a 90hp automatic.

I aint rich. But that would be freaking amazing for this long lost drawing I did.

Well, on a budget, the 2.3 lima 4 cylinder is a very robust motor in that mustang and putting it on a t5transmission with boost would be extremely fun and economical. However, it's not much lighter than a 5.0. the volvo redblock isn't all that light either. The t5 weighs about 340 lbs. but without turbo or oil or accessorys. The 2.3 Ford engine has a following of people putting the 16v volvo head on it but you need some machine shop work and some people aren't so successful. It can be done.....but I've learned any crazy swaps and changes costs money and alot of driveway labor. If you have helpful friends that like beer and a machine shop that likes beer you can save alot of money.

I feel like you could get a 8v Redblock to 300HP pretty easily on a relatively modest budget. It's not as pretty as the 16V but if you're not looking to make crazy power but still want something unique a turbo 8V Redblock in a Fox Body could be fun

Issues I think you would run into: Oil sump vs front cross-member, Volvo motors SPENSIVE, and sacrificing tons of displacement for little to no loss in weight.

Trust me, if I had stupid money, it would be in my Pinto. If only we could get a bunch of us together to build that group b fox, it looks so awesome.

I think boost weighs less than big blocks and big heads. But its also about getting the motor back further. There are many aftermarket K members that are tubular and might fit. They have them for LS1 swaps any ford modular motor. Also I should add my car currently has a 2.3 ford motor that cant be much different than a volvo. Here is a photo of a bolt on off the shelf k member you can see just how much clearance there is. There are even quite a few fox stangs running 2JZ motors.

Thank you for an informative reply. I will be doing much researches.

That would be awesome. I think there should be a Jalopnik project car sponsors could donate jalops do the work and show it at some car place like SEMA Goodwood or something maybe lots more jalops would visit this place.

How can we make this work?
![]() 11/03/2013 at 12:10 |

I have yet to see an actual car running the 16v volvo head. All the threads of people building them sort of just die off with no updates for years. I am not sure why this is but if it was a legitimate easy swap to do I would think there would be more completed cars running around.

True, but looking at the costs involved, even tho it's not too expensive, a V8 swap is much easier to do. Bolts right in, no machine work.

yeah thats true I guess I just want to do something different and I am afraid of weight. I want something fun and handles well which doesnt mean I cant have that with a 5.0 but I guess I am just not a huge fan of the 5.0.
