I always thought it went like "Play an accordion, go to jail(?)"

Damn things were tough to clean when detailing sometimes.

Looks like a Toyota AE-85/86 or something related to it?

Guess what I found hiding under the center console of my 86

Kinja'd!!!

Bad picture but there is definitely an accordion shift boot in there!

Indeed, it is an AE86.

This is from a post I made last week where I installed a short shifter , I was quite surprised to find an accordion down there.

maybe its for isolating sound? my '08 v6 mustang makes a soft whine like if i had a blower on the engine, but they're the gears,

Honestly, I think (at least in my case) it acts to seal out water/dirt/nastiness from the outside. Once I had it removed I could clearly see the transmission case as well as a bit of my garage floor.

The whine is probably just the transmission mount, my 86 started whining a lot more noticeably after I installed some stiffer transmission mount bushings... I kind of like it

ah yes, the whine doesnt bother me, but i would like to be able to make faster gear changes, i dont know if changing the shifter would work, because i think its about the synchronizers, they are working fine, but they dont let you make fast gear changes, its not so smooth, thats why some people say it has a tractor tranny. its true.

Maybe throw in a thinner viscosity or better than OEM synthetic gear oil?

And I did not really install the shifter to lower shift times (shit like that is negligible anyways)

I did it to improve the feel of the transmission, stock felt pretty dead. Now it feels just as good as s2000/rx-8/mx-5 boxes I've sampled
