Does that title sound strange to you? Let us debate the best drivers of all time. The black stig, the white stig, or Stig’s fat American Cousin. Seriously though you can fit any "greatest ever" race car drivers or greatest ever car into one of those categories and people would say he or she or it was great but so and so is better. Many of us go to great lengths to prove this point and have stats memorized and rebuttals planned before we even get asked. It is all well and good and part of what makes it fun to talk about racing and cars and drivers and future cars and future drivers. But what if we didn’t care. I know it is hard but turn off your inner fanboy or those gears in your head. What if we all put down the wrenches, the racing caps, or jackets, sponsored wall clocks and neon lights and just walked away. Would any of it matter?
Would those race car drivers and teams still compete without our need to see it or encouraging words?
NO! Oh wait that was me screaming, I couldn’t do it.

In truth we need each other but before there was organized anything there was enthusiast and fan boys of enthusiast wrenching by hand to make the fast times and everything else. We spurred the automotive industry. An enthusiast created almost every car, every enthusiast and fan boy has ever loved. Cars that fail and have little love, I am looking at you late 80s FWD GM ,Ford, Dodge box cars, where probably not designed by enthusiasts! It is like we as enthusiast can stand behind the passion of other enthusiasts. Fanboys feel that sense of pride and immediately sing praises. We will good cars into existence and to keep producing and stomp out the horrible cars that make it through. Sure the bean counters are many but would they have an enjoyment if it wasn’t for us. Even Toyota eventually updates their lineup based on our taste just 10 years too late…..

What would a world be like without enthusiast?
Let us remember to never stop pushing for better things to make our passion even better. And to continue to stand up against horrible ideas that will rip the soul right out of us. We are the soul and life force in this arena. If we leave it will never be the same. Races will stop, cars would all look the same sound the same feel the same and drive without us. The passion would die and something even great would be lost.

Good post, it would get more attention with a nice lead pic and maybe a few supporting ones sprinkled throughout. Oppo likes the car-porns. :)

most enthusiast i know don't know how to change their oil (or similar task). Fan boys to me are 13 year old Top Gear nerds that know the HP of every supercar and debate the Agera R and Bugatti Veyron battle for hours. Cant really see them wrenching anything lol. I have now modified my unofficial car love chart as followed:

-fanboy

-enthusiast

-gear head

-grey area

-grumpy mechanic

you may modify it as you wish :]

I think enthusiast/geeks in any area of society drive innovation and pressure better performance whether it's a car or computer. We help the designers and engineers battle the bean counters. Sometimes they/we win and sometimes not so much, i.e. the K-Car or Citation. Great thoughts. Add a picture.

If I wanted to hang out with fan-boys and "enthusiasts", I'd hang out at Gizmodo and Kotaku.

LOL! and my former Ford Focus ST. The Lambo belonged to Mario Andretti. The Testarossa and Diablo are owned by the same guy.
