"Satish Kondapavulur" (becauseCAR)
11/02/2013 at 00:28 • Filed to: MY STUPID LISTS | 3 | 100 |
Apart from playing too much solitaire for my own good and writing these lists, I spend a lot of time on online car configurators. You know, those sections of an automaker's website where you can create your dream car, feel a sense of accomplishment for five seconds, and then get back to that paper you were writing. (Though in my case, it's more like " Let's see what I can do to double the price of that Cayman... ")
Well, one thing I've noticed is that some cars don't have very many colors to choose from, short of a $99 Maaco paint job, with the reason being sales numbers for these cars is low.
As a result, I’ve decided to mention the vehicles that have a paltry selection of colors, lest you go into a showroom and have a sales consultant try his absolute hardest to convince you beige is the new brown and how "stylish" it is, never mind his white shirt, khakis, and likely clip-on tie.
Author's Note: If you've been mercifully reading these lists for the last two or three weeks, I need list ideas, before I, like every other automotive writer, do a "Five Cars Sold Elsewhere That Should Be Sold In America" list. Any suggestions are much appreciated and I'll give credit where it's due.
Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet
When I spend over $40,000 to purchase a vehicle like the Murano CrossCabriolet, I'd like to actually have a palette of more than five colors to choose from. After all, I'm going to have a difficult time selling it, and it won't be because of the color. (This is, of course, if I was the type of person who buys a CrossCabriolet. Which'll probably be in a couple years when the value hits rock-bottom.)
That's a pity, because the only colors offered now are black, white, silver, and burgundy, instead of that light teal that served as the launch color (and is in the picture). And the people who would buy the CrossCab would want a baby blue, possibly a nice pink, and a bronze that would remind you of Paris Hilton's skin (that last one was offered at launch too).
Hyundai Genesis 5.0 R-Spec
As I've waxed poetic before, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! But I didn’t mention a downside to it, which, apart from being a $47,000 Hyundai, turned out to be color selection according to the Jalopnik commenters. Therefore, I promptly went to Hyundai's configurator and discovered the ugly truth for myself, though I was more taken in with the comparison to the Lincoln MKS, something I was surprised Hyundai bothered with.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
This may be due to a major 2014 redesign of the Genesis, since there was no updated webpage for a 2014 model. Personally, I'm fine with the R-Spec's color palette, which consists of white, black, grey, silver, and red, but not blue. Honestly, to fulfill the car's purpose of being completely anonymous and being mistaken for something else (John Krafcik may heavily disagree with me), the colors do their job.
Any manual transmission-equipped Honda Accord sedan
Just be aware. If you consider an Accord sedan with a manual, you will have a choice of only two colors. Either silver or grey. No white. No blue. No red. Unless you go for a manual Sport version, in which case you get !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . In other words, Honda couldn't care less about manual Accord buyers, many of whom will have to pay list price, because manual Accords are so rare.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
That's a shame because the Accord, especially with a manual, is among the best front-drive midsize sedans on the market. Meanwhile, the Mazda6 offers an equal-opportunity experience in selecting hues whether the car has an automatic or manual. And the Mazda6 sells nowhere in the volumes that Accords do. On the other hand, the Camry doesn't even offer a manual.
Mazda MX-5
Maybe the lack of color selection is due to a future update of the MX-5. But there are only four or five colors available on this car, none of them being orange or any shade of blue. But that's what you would want with a sports car like the MX-5, especially since you need to stand out from the other MX-5 owners at the autocross course.
The most Jalop of all the MX-5's, the Club version, only has four color options: silver, black, red, and white. This, ladies and gentlemen, is a disgrace because colors like orange, a light blue, and yellow would go fantastically with those black wheels. Though let's face it. People will voluntarily become colorblind to buy the MX-5 since no other two-seat roadsters can match its price.
Any flagship German luxury sedan
Believe it or not, the Audi A8, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, and BMW 7-Series offer brown (a favorite Jalopnik color, since we all love the 1970s) apart from the usual five or six shades of black. I can understand why the colors tend to be quite boring, since the super-rich who drive and are driven in them need the color to match their suits.
However, none of them offer red. Which irritates both me and presumably foreign royalty. Yes, you probably can specify a certain red from the through BMW Individual, Audi exclusive, or Mercedes-Benz designo for a high price, but there's nothing wrong with offering red for normal buyers.
I was reminded of this when I saw an older Barolo Red Metallic S-Class pass by a couple weeks ago and wondered if I could get that color on the new car. Unfortunately, the answer was no on the configurator, leading to this list. Hopefully, Mercedes-Benz sees fit to offer red on the S-Class to put an end to the $99 Maaco paint job special.
Which other cars offer a trivial selection of colors?
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! runs !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , named because "Clunker.com" was $82 at auction and would've taken 30% out of the balance of his Eagle Vision for LeMons fund. In between contemplating cross-country runs, he spends much of his time attempting to convince others that his MkV Jetta 2.0T Wolfsburg is indeed a sports sedan.

Indeed, but it wasn't an error on his part to offer only black at first, because at first, the Model T was essentially in a class of itself. Once he started to face competition as "me too!" companies copied his production methods and started to make cheap cars for the masses, he wisely offered more choice.

Not to be THAT guy, but all of this is BS. The model T was offered in several colors from its inception in 1908, and the color varied depending on the body style. It wasn't until 1914 that the Model T was offered in only black. That change took place because offering one color meant the paint dried at a uniform rate which further streamlined assembly. Also, black was cheap and easy to apply, keeping costs down.

Amen to the Accord MT. The Canadian market gets more colors then we do. And I really dig the blue. But I ended up with a grey Sport because at least it wasn't black. And I do like the way the wheels coordinate. And as a side benefit, every time I see a colorful Sport, I become a smug a-hole with a manual transmission superiority complex.

In defense of the MX-5, 2013 was the first year they didn't offer a blue, and I'm certain the lack of color options is due to the impending model change.
Over the years, they have offered several different shades of blue, red and green, Competition Yellow, Evolution Orange, and the ever-popular Mariner (Smurf) Blue.
So while the selection right now may now be so spectacular, I think we can cut Mazda a little slack. Because Miata.

I have no idea how Subaru didn't make this list. Outside of the WRX/STi/BRZ models, their available color schemes are literally terrible. Take the base Impreza for example: you can get it in a palette of boring ass colors. Even better, the only adequate colors (white, black, even the deep red maybe) have TAN INTERIORS ONLY. Why for the love of god do car manufacturers even still make a tan interior? Is there any human anywhere that says "Wow, this tan interior is significantly better than this black or gray interior?" - I DON'T THINK SO. I can forgive white/almond interiors in certain cars because they can pull off classy (see: Land Rover).

What's strange about the flagship German sedans is that they did come in those colors just a couple years ago. When the new A8 launched in 2011 it was available in a deep blue, and possibly a red. The last generation S-Class was definitely available in blue and red, and the 7 Series still has blue (and a weird turquoise) but not the red it used to. These colors used to be available, but have been removed, probably because no one bought them. One thing that I find very interesting though is that a new color has been added for the BMW and the Audi that they did not have before: A Gold/Champagne color.

A friend of mine bought an M3 sedan about 3 years ago. It was bright red as in firetruck red. When he ordered it at his local dealer he had to sign like three papers saying he is fully aware he is buying a red car. When he asked his dealer why they need an additional agreement on the color the salesman told him that in the past there have been actual cases where people were forced to buy cars in shiny bright colors so they would lose money (because you know how hard it is in Germany to sell a car that has a color other black or silver)

With the 7/A8/S class I don't find it so critical to have the very limited color selection, 80% are sold as black anyway, and on these cars paying extra for custom is almost nothing in comparison to other extras.
What I currently really miss is red color for BMW 5, the great Imola red would look fantastic. Audi and Mercedes offer red color for A6/E and especially the E class T model in red looks very very good.

Eh, depending on the car, and paint color, tan interiors look fine on some cars, just like on other cars gray or black interiors can make the inside seem cheap, or like a dark prison cell.
Personally I wish there were more interior color choices on mainstream cars; blues, reds, greens, etc.

I'm guessing you don't live in the south? One of our cars has black interior and is like the fires of hell 8 months out of the year. Our new Jetta Sportwagon has the tan interior, however that is only for the seats and some of the trim and it makes a tremendous difference in the summer. That said, a nice black interior always LOOKS better than the tan.

Seriously agree with Audi. They USED to have a great selection of colours, and they were well considered and looked terrific. Not so any more. Beige, taupe, light brown, black and sort of red. Yuck. Mercedes isn't too far off.
I'm amazed at Ford and Hyundai....great colours, and a really well done gloss coat. They stand out from a distance.

Ford Australia had a teal like color called breeze for a short time. Maybe it was unpopular or something, but now it is certainly rare and eye catching.

Note to GM: Never let Mark Reuss go. You lost Lutz at your peril.

You can order an F10 M5 with Imola Red. Though I'm sure it's down to BMW Individual...

People are boring today, it's a beige world. Back in the adventurous olden days, there was a lot more color/interior/engine variety. Through its lifespan, the W126 could be ordered in a vast array of colors:

Not a problem. I know there are some bigoted Jalops that think you're not a 'real' driver unless you drive stick, but I have a physical issue which makes using a clutch safely all but impossible, so I have only ever done it once. I might have bought a Clio before, but Renault hasn't offered a self-shifting version until now.

Honda stopped caring about manual transmissions many years ago. A lot of dealerships don't even carry manuals and they have to be special ordered. Since most people would never buy a car they can't test drive, its paucity increases even further. I honestly don't understand why they even bother to make them anymore since they clearly don't care about that market.

Ref. #4 - For $2,500 you can get an Audi A8 painted any color of the spectrum you'd like through the "Audi Exclusive" program. They will even guarantee the residual on a lease for it, if you choose something like "Taco Night Shits Brown"

About the list idea. I know that like me, you're of Indian origin. How about N strangest things seen on the road in India? Where N is an element of the set {5,10}.

Probably just to keep costs done on such a limited availability car. Takes a month or more to ship them here
