Spend time on writing a post on an automotive oddity about which you're genuinely pleased->Get hardly any response.
Say FWD sucks->
I won't say I don't like gratification by way of little stars (thanks all!), but it does seem to encourage soundbites.

Yeah, it does, same experience here.
The older than kinja itself starring system worked because it rewarded effort - people knew there were consequences. This is just liking on facebook. You even like a beautiful photo about someone dying on effing facebook... it's that inconsequential.

Anyone know what recommendations do here here anyways? (besides a pat on the back)
Sometimes my replies are at the top of the page, sometimes they are not. Sometimes they have a lot of replies, sometimes they have lots of recommendations. Sometimes neither, sometimes both.
Pro tip: If you plan on replying with just an image, post a word above the photo in your reply that describes what it is. Then edit immediately, and remove the text. The reply will have that text in it when you hover over a recommendation, so you know what it was about so you don't have to click the link to your comment.
For example, the link to this reply is simply called "BOOGERS!"

I think recommendations are just a pat on the back. I don't know. I don't even know how the top stories work. I generally suck at Kinja. The only thing I know about Kinja is that if you annotate an image, the square will show up as being at the wrong location, but secretly Kinja did it right all along.

I'm pretty convinced that it's never worth more than 5 minutes of my time to craft an OPPO post... They really need to work on a system that rewards longer-form writing or photo collections.

Judge how well your article is received by the visitors ember and not by the recommendation star. Or... just be happy that those who read it did not state how crappy it was in the comments.

about a month ago , somebody ranted about too many recommendations and not enough comments , so I quit giving stars unless the post made me giggle .
