I used to think Trans Ams were "redneck Ferraris" (as nicknamed by the bellicose fourteen-year-olds at Urban Dictionary). After being exposed to Banditbait on Oppo on a daily basis I've come around to really like these things. Everything about them is Bitchin' with a capital B.
Fire Chicken: Bitchin'!
Psychadelic patterned gold wheels: Bitchin'!
What appears to be a shaker hood: Bitchin'!
T-Tops: you get the picture.
This is why I'm happy to be wasting so much time on Oppo. It's exposing me to automotive subcultures I'd likely never otherwise get to see firsthand. Thank you Bandit, and thank you Oppo.

I always thought Firebirds were what Camaros were supposed to be.

T-tops are awesome. Too bad the new Camaro doesn't have them :(

Sorry? You're welcome? I'm not a redneck, seriously. I defy stereotypes, I don't own a wife beater, I'm not a guido, I don't have a mullet, and I'm trying to restore my car not run it to the ground the the previous redneck owner.
My advice if you ever wanted to drive one: don't drive a late 70s one, you would be surprised how underpowered they are in stock form. Go for a 1970 - 1973 model with the 455 engine.
Also, from a normal person standpoint they are utterly dreadful cars. The t-tops mean there is no body stability and the roof leaks. The engines have no power, they weigh a ton, they rust like crazy, and they are too new to be respected by muscle guys. It takes a certain amount of crazy to like these cars.

They are very good looking, particularly the era of the photo you have here. Their quality was so-so, but they are iconic.

T-tops didn't come out until 77 though, and those were smaller than the 78+ versions. 79 is when they got that silly front end
So, 78 is the best year.

No Bro hugs needed. Pass me the 9/16" wrench, we got work to do.

Thank Hal Neesham, director of Smokey and the Bandit, for our mutual lust for those things. Just a legend.

Agreed, that's why I am building mine to '78 spec. They had the most "improvements" with the fewest "costs" (ECUs, turbos, 85mph speedos, 5mph bumpers, etc).

You don't even know. The interior of my car is all metric and it seems an entire engine can be built with nothing but a 9/16" and a 3/4" wrench.

I hate T-tops the rest is good. I just had to say that. Also I want a Rockford firebird bad.

That is the wonderful thing about Oppo getting exposed to cars we might not be into, or even know about. But the passion for those autos is contagious... I was never into classic Alfas two years ago, but I love those buggers. Don't know if I ever want to own one...but i can't get enough Alfa car-porn!

In high school, my best friend had a new 77 Trans Am just like the one in the main picture of this post. Dear God, that was an awesome car (in my 17 year old eyes).

I'm the same way with miata/s2000. I used to be like "I would take the s2000 by a long shot", Now I would have to think long and hard. I also used to hate the original miata's and now I love them.
