I don't know if anyone else has heard about this yet, but apparently !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! got their hands on footage of the '13/'14 GT500 on the 'Ring. The time, though it bests the ZL1's 7:41.27, is iffy since they added the timer themselves; they've also posted comparisons with the ZL1 and Z/28 (the first 7:37.47 lap).
For the Camaro's part, Al Oppenheiser claims that the Z/28 !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! in dry conditions, but it's unofficial since no video was taken of said lap.

I will be a little suspicious of this time unless an official video gets put out. Its not that the GT500 is not a good car and it is fast as all get out and has a mountain of horse power but part of me really doubts it could be that close the the Z28.
But we shall see I guess.

Al O. claimed that the Z/28 ran a 7:31.9 lap in dry conditions... while the cameras weren't rolling. We'll see.

That is true and I can see that since it was moving it in a bit of rain. I think the part I am being held up on here is how much more advanced both the Z28 and Zl1 suspension set ups are compared to the GT500. But the GT500 has lots more power so it is possible.

I believe it. The Nurburgring is a power track, although it has a lot of turns they are mainly medium to high speed, and it's a very fast track. I also don't understand why GM doesn't have the fucking camera rolling at ALL TIMES when setting fast laps there.

Lighter, +80HP, and its only 2 seconds faster than the ZL1??? and its even slower than the Z28, while having a 160hp advantage??? I'll take the Camaro. I honestly cant see why this website favors the mustang over the camaro, when the camaro is clearly the better track car. ZL1 & Z28 >GT500 & Boss 302

The Camaro is only a better car once you start turning it into a real deal proposition with more advanced suspension and trims. In bare-bones form the Mustang is slightly better. But yes, I'd rather have a ZL1 than a GT500.

gt 500 is cheaper than the zl1. its not much cheaper, around 2k, but then again its fords best mustang, and chevys second hottest camaro. also, msrp for the z28 is gonna be far more than that. buy a corvette, beat both of them, and you get an air conditioner too.

the GT500 is cheaper, but to make it as race-ready as the camaro (with factory options) it is more expensive. My main choice would certainly still be the C7 overall

its a pity ford doesnt have an answer to the vette that doesnt involve throwing more horsepower at the same car. im just glad people are excited about them again.

Timecode inserted to video is accurate, it just matters where the start and stop points are. Those can obviously be fudged. You'd know it if it was fudged enough to make a big difference though.
The thing about these 'Ring times is that there's no sanctioning body telling people how to run the track, with what equipment, or even necessarily where to start the lap times. Running start, standing start etc. Until that happens, the video posted above has about as much validity as a video posted by a manufacturer. One could argue that because SVTPerformance is not a manufacturer, you could trust the video a bit more. However SVTP does lean to Ford's camp. Being a member of the site myself, I can tell you that there's quite a large group of GM and Mopar enthusiasts there as well.
In regards to the time itself, the 'Ring does tend to favor high powered cars for a good section of the course. The GT500 with it's massive power advantage as well as a bit of a weight advantage should in truth excel there. That doesn't necessarily make the car better or worse than the ZL1 or Z28 for that matter. My belief is that all of these cars are incredibly awesome. To be able to purchase a showroom stock vehicle, at a somewhat reasonable price, that smashes the 8:00 minute mark at the 'Ring is a win for everybody. As a buyer, pick your poison. I don't think you can go wrong with either.

Seems odd Ford wouldn't have released numbers like this themselves. Friends in the know have told me the car just isn't set up for the 'Ring, whatever that means. They wanted to focus on VIR.

Can't tell if you're serious right now. FYI Mustangs have a live rear axle, while the ZL1 and Z28 have suspension systems that are more advanced than most Ferrari's. The Mustang and Camaro times being so close in that respect makes the Camaro look like a joke. Once the new Mustang comes out with the independent rear suspension, there will be no contest.
And the reason people here favor the Mustang is because it is simply the better car, in aspects other than just pure speed.
