I've got a three hour road trip coming up on Friday afternoon, and I'm working on a playlist for it. Lately, I've been in a throwback mood, and this playlist is going to take me back to high school, with songs from bands I used to listen to all the time way back in the day.
Bands on the list so far:
Sublime
Goo Goo Dolls
Eve 6
Violent Femmes
Smashing Pumpkins
Foo Fighters
Nine Days
OAR
No Doubt
Spin Doctors
OMC
Blues Traveler
Everclear
Blink-182
Counting Crows
Greenday
The All-American Rejects
The Presidents of the United States
Train
Sugar Ray
Bowling For Soup
Barenaked Ladies
The White Stripes
The Verve
The New Radicals
Smash Mouth
The Black Crowes
Matchbox 20
As you can see, generally a mix of Alt Rock, Post-Grunge, Ska, Punk Rock, and Indie Rock. This is going to be my awkward high school years all over again, this time with with a good ten years of hindsight and wisdom thrown into the mix.
Any other suggestions? Try to keep it in the same general genre mix, and if you have a specific song that you like, by all means throw it in the comments.

You know what I enjoy on three hour drives? Turning them into four hour drives by taking a more fun route, a nice pair of sunglasses, and just plain enjoying the fact that I'm able to spend a few hours in a car (and get paid for it most of the time if it's during the week).

I'd go a little further back and add Pearl Jam, AiC and Soundgarden to that list, though Soundgarden is probably the best one to drive to among the three. Tom Petty and Bob Seger are sound choices as well, and I used to listen a lot to Guns N' Roses' Illusion albums back in the 90's on family trips.

Hmm, 90s alt-rock? Do You like today's alt-rock. If so, google Sirius-XM alt rock top 18. They play today's hit alt-rock and that is a way to find some newer bands.
Check out, Alt-J BreezeBlocks & Tessellate , Lorde Team , Bear Hands Giants, any Fitz and the Tantrums especially the Walker , and 6AM , Grouplove Ways to Go , Walk of the Earth Red Hands , RAC Let Go, And NEVER forget The White Stripes, The Black Keys, and Modest Mouse - Dashboard is an awesome driving song

I don't actually have Sirius, and I don't listen to alt rock a whole lot any more, but when I'm in the mood for nostalgia, it's my immediate go-to. I wound up finding The Maine using Pandora, and I might throw a few of their songs up there as well.

Pearl Jam was a little too early, and most GNR songs are just a little to high tension for the audience that will be in the car. I love GNR, but I need something a little mellower. I'll definitely see what I've got for AiC and Soundgarden, though; those are good suggestions.

I can't believe I actually forgot about 3 Days Grace. I need to fix that. Right now.

If I'm by myself, that's fine; but even then, sometimes, I just want to get where I'm going and be there with the people I went with/went to see. At that point, driving time takes a backseat to quality time.

Can't go wrong with Jar of Flies, Sap and Superunknown then, those are among my favorite records. It might also be worth checking out Temple of the Dog's eponymous disc and Mad Season's Above. They're a little earlier as well, but Hunger Strike and River of Deceit.
