Has anyone ever taken the headers off their car. . .

And then started the engine up? What did it sound like, and did you go deaf?

Running with literally nothing bolted to the heads? No

Open exhaust manifolds? Yes, this was years ago, I was swapping in a set of midpipes with 2 of the 4 cats deleted.

I wish I had one from my LT header install, but that would have been to annoying to do.

WHAT? YOU NEED TO SPEAK UP!

I'm kidding. Kinda.
I did it once on a Big Block Chevy. It was not pleasant.
Long term exposure to open headers has a similar effect and is part of the reason I can only hear out of one ear.

I hear you laughing. I have only done this with no resonators or mufflers when I was changing out the catback. I will be getting headers soon, and I am going to see what happens then. . .

Open downpipe, yes. This one was stock

And this one was a 3" catless downpipe, which was near painful in and out car when the wastegate opened up.

I've never ran an engine without headers but I've ran a couple with the exhaust disconnected from the manifold and I ran a 7.3 powerstroke with the exhaust removed at the turbo. What a noise that made!

I guess that is something to keep in mind. I probably won't do it for more than a minute.

I once had nothing in front of the intake on a supercharged car and it sounded like a jet engine was taking off when I revved the throttle

the camera doesn't portray how loud that actually was

I have to wonder how loud this was, compared to my current exhaust though.... to bad I don't own a dB meter, we tried the dB meter app on my friends iphone and my current exhaust maxed it out at 105 dB, I know its louder than that, 90 is the legal limit.

Does a CBR600RR in a FSAE car count? It sounded like loud. And gloriousness. Like this, but twice as loud and indoors. Not to loud at idle, but holy hell does it scream with revs.

No video, but we had a shitbox mk1 VW cab to play with when I was in high school, and we ran it for a bit with open equal-length headers and intermittent ignition on two cylinders. It sounded like two harleys strapped together. Mmm shop class.....

Jeeez, I think mine while be 100 dB at WOT(max), other than that it hopefully shouldn't be obnoxious. 4 cylinders start to get raspy when they start to get too loud.

This bodes well for my ITB project. Though unsupercharged, hoping to have some righteous suction noise.

I do too, My Volvo is too original to do anything to. Oh and I guess I do have another example of the same thing...I was driving my dad's 2005 Taurus wagon and the exhaust fell off at the flex pipe. I've never enjoyed a rev-unhappy V6 so much.

It will sound like a broken vacuum. Supercharger whine comes from those damn rotors spinning fast enough to enter red shift. It was a riviera with the M62 eaton meant for the quick spool up so DAMN those things spun up fast.

Actually, you need to hear an early VFR (90-94) running with the muffler removed. Oh my sweet glory! It sounds half NASCAR, half power boat, and half Formula One. Gear drive cams, sooo wonderful.

Broken vacuum was somewhat what I had in mind - eight stacks open to atmosphere when not wearing mini-filter hats. I'm just hoping I quell the exhaust enough I can hear both adequately.

Eatons rock. Given the choice, I'm very much a supers>turbos guy.

The insta-torque from those things is epic. From a dead stop, the 2 ton riv was a bit slow. But a 15 mph roll? With the extra tall first gear on those things? I had no issues keeping up with a G35 and a Mk5 GTI. It made an excellent camera car on woodward.

Clearly, you need a supercharger on your integra.

10/30/2013 at 00:47

Kinja'd!!!0

First I would need an integra - no mention of Integras was made, but a supered Integra would be rad. The ITB (independent throttle body) project I mention is taking 8 Honda CBR600 throttle bodies and putting them on a Rover V8... which is basically a Buick.

There's also a case to be made for importing an Aussie Falcon XB and installing a super with an electric clutch and a bypass, because Road Warrior.

I had the header off my Subaru a few weeks ago to drop the steering rack. When I put the rack back in, I decided to start up the car without the header to check the rack and power steering lines for leaks before I got too carried away with re-assembly.

Holy moly is that loud. I never touched the throttle, just let it idle enough to cycle the rack a few times, but it sounded like a Porsche rally car.

By the way, DON'T do this and try to drive the car. The low pressure pulse in between exhaust cycles can suck cold air in, and if your valves are hot, you can crack or warp your exhaust valves from the temperature differential. That's the reason that WWII fighter planes had the tiny short pipes on the engines - they are just long enough to keep cold air from being sucked into the exhaust.
