Every so often, I start daydreaming about the E34 M5 in Avus Blue with the throwing star wheels. Are they that much harder to maintain than the E39?

I like these a lot! I feel like the e28's and e34's don't get the love they deserve. These were the last hand built BMW's!

Fantastic looking thing. Problem with the e34 is they are just too freaking heavy; the 3.6 version was no faster/slightly slower than the e28 M5 and felt much more cumbersome, only a 3.8 will do the trick. But those looks, the possibility of having a wagon, and that huge straight six with that wonderfully mechanical clattery sound make the want strong indeed.

I would say no for parts, but finding a mechanic who is capable and knowledgable with these cars would be difficult. Finding one in good shape is another problem.

What about maintenance costs vs. the E39? Is the E34 cheaper to maintain or more expensive?

It's about the same, and given that they are both getting old, at this point it depends on the previous owner's maintenance. That said, having owned both, my e39 turned out to be much more reliable.

Interesting. Good to know!
So tempting to get an E39 M5. Especially since values seem to be inching up. I have too many cars right now but I may be able to swing it in a year or two. Thanks for the info!
