Does anyone else see the strong resemblance in this completely not corporate but magazine-published render to the SN-95's luscious hips? Both generations were minimizing the side-scoop and pulling the rear pillar as far back as possible for a more gran touring look, with the appropriate fender flares.

For comparison:

That rear pillar and fender are almost identical to the SN-95's, except they (in an exceedingly ugly way) pull the fender in instead of flaring it out for the wheel like the SN-95 did.

I'm glad, because those rear fenders were the best looking part of that car.

You know what I hadn't noticed it but it does look like it's moving more in that direction!

Nope. I mean, there are some very fleeting similarities, but it's not that similar.

fox bodys embody what was good about the 80s

ford 302 series is a worthy competitor to the sbc.

the sn95s embody what was bad about the 90s'

modulars lose to the LS series period.

You just ruined something I was otherwise almost able to justify.

In what way is the Modular inferior to the LS series? Legitimate question.

From my understanding, the Modular's only downside is the small room for bore. The highest stock bore is 3.7" (5.0) whereas the highest LS bore is 4.125", which allows for higher RPM usage for the same displacement. However, aftermarket Modular blocks will go up to 4.125" as well.

That being said, the LS's wide-bore high-RPM functionality is more than offset by the OHV design, lack of variable valve timing, and inferior cylinder lining (Plasma Wire Transfer Arc on the modular VS cast-in iron liners on LS blocks). Only the LS7 had pressed-in liners, and those are still worse than the PWTA liners.

So from a mechanical standpoint, the LS series has 1 advantage (bore size) and a number of disadvantages.

You could argue that the LS series has more parts for less price available (but the difference isn't very large, 10-15% price difference at most for the same quality parts) but the Modular is a much more optimized and advanced engine.

I'll put it this way: If you give the technology already on the modular engine to the LS1's displacement and RPM you would get a 20-25% power increase. Chevy doesn't do that because they can get away with selling outdated, inefficient, but slightly cheaper technology.

The distance from the bottom of the fender to the window is the same, the location of the median line is the same, the width of the rear pillar as it extends is the same, the fender flare from the edge of the body is the same. The only difference is that instead of the flare continuing down to the wheel, it tucks in and then juts out again.

we can argue practicalities and technicalities all day, but nobody does 4.6 swaps.

That's onl y because LS mounts are very similar to SBC mounts, and SBFs are still readily available.

That doesn't make it a bad motor, that makes it less accessible. That's like saying that the LSX454 is worse than the LS1, because it's more expensive and not in as many cars, or that the 426 Hemi was a shitty motor because they cost so much more than a 440.

Fact is, people put Ford Racing swaps into all sorts of Fords, (and many race cars) but rarely in cars outside of their brands.

You could just as easily argue that LS1 swaps are popular because no one wants to drive the cars the motor came in stock.

It still looks fundamentally different to me. The character line goes inboard going bottom-to-top on the old car and the opposite way on the new car. The shape of the rear quarter window also has a bit more kink to it.

Don't get me wrong, I see what you mean, but I just don't think it looks all that similar.

i suppose you are right. my original intent was to illustrate that the 2v offerings on the first 4.6s were absolutely paltry, not to make it seem like the series is somehow designed inferior to the Ls engine. again, the coyote is a modular, and it is an incredible engine, but there arent many out there as opposed to the 4.6s. not sure how saying 'nobody does 4.6 swaps' is like me hating on the hottest v-8s to come out of detroit, but whatever, im biased in favor of ford as it stands. im just glad the smog motor is dead, and the horsepower war is back in full swing. cheers mate
