I have a friend who is getting a 2004 WRX and I told him it would look better without the wing and hood scoop. The intercooler is mounted in the front. Oppo what are your thoughts?

I think you have to do something special to take that wing off... otherwise the trunk might go through the back window? I'd take them both off.

Obligatory WRX needs obligatory wing and hood scoop.
Nah, it's up to him!

With a FMIC, I find the scoop to be unnecessary and garish.

Keep the hood scoop. Always. Spoiler is up to him.

I want the WRX STi bits in a normal looking scooby. I'd even get salad shooter wheels and not wash it every once and a while. Lull fools into a false sense of security and all that.
![]() 10/28/2013 at 18:43 |

Well you need the scoop either way. Either because top mount, or because turbo cooling.
I say ditch the wing because sexy. Been trying to get a buddy of mine to trunk swap his '05 WRB because it'd look a ton better without the park bench. And because sleeper.
That's a lot of becauses.

Oh. The scoop has a purpose in the WRX? Not blocked by plastic?
![]() 10/28/2013 at 18:49 |

I would say no wing and barely visible scoop, just for the cooling and looks.
![]() 10/28/2013 at 18:51 |

What he needs is this. . .
I think it looks nice without a hood scoop, but it is needed. But if you can make the scoop smaller but just as functional then it would look awesome.

Correct.

I feel like the scoop would still help a bit with cooling. But yes, it looks like crap to me, garish is definitely the right word.
![]() 10/28/2013 at 19:08 |

FMIC makes it unnecessary. Otherwise I'm with you.

A scooby isnt a true scooby without its wing. It looks like it got neutered.

Everyone is going wingless, buck the trend, fully rally style!
![]() 10/28/2013 at 19:13 |

This is true, but if you aren't going to change the intercooler location then it is. Either way, no scoop is the best!

Scoop yes, Spoiler depends on how much 100+ he dares. Stability or something.
Dunno.
My speeo doesn't even do triple digits. I stick to the usual Subaru mods.

I second this.

I like the scoop because if you're sitting at an intersection and the lighting is just right you can see hot vapors rising out of the scoop, and who doesn't want to see that?
![]() 10/28/2013 at 19:24 |

I thought the scoop was to feed the intercooler. If its front mounted isn't it kind of redundant?

Take it off! TAKE IT ALL OFF!!!

The 2004 STI has a TMIC — no?
![]() 10/28/2013 at 19:32 |

You're absolutely correct. OP specified that this one was front mounted though.
![]() 10/28/2013 at 19:35 |
|
Oh well then, yeah get rid of it!
![]() 10/28/2013 at 19:56 |

you'll still get air flow in there to help cool the engine, it doesn't hurt to keep it.
![]() 10/28/2013 at 19:58 |
|
Yes, but it still serves a purpose for cooling the turbo and engine bay in general. Unless your car is bone stock under the hood, EXCEPT for the FMIC, you could probably go scoop-less without issue. But if you're heavily modded, you need that extra rush of air in there.

if the scoop is going I'd recommend a hood vent.
that one is from KSTech, louvre plates are available if you're worried about rain getting in.
![]() 10/28/2013 at 20:06 |

The scoop is important because it directs dried leaves onto your intercooler and headers.
![]() 10/28/2013 at 20:07 |

not sure about wrx, but on my legacy gt, the hoodscoop has an diverter that sends air over the turbo, in addition to the TMIC.
![]() 10/28/2013 at 20:12 |
|
They all do, but you can change that.
![]() 10/28/2013 at 20:12 |

I'm not 100 percent sure that's true (though i'm happy to admit, it probably is true and you're likely correct)
Underhood aerodynamics are tricky though. The Celica GT4 had big problems because the hood scoop actually ended up hurting cooling rather than effectively feeding the intercooler. I'm sure Subaru have a more effective design, but you never know. The smooth flow of air from the front to the back of the hood could be screwed up by forcing a bunch more air in right in the middle. Under normal top mounted intercooled conditions this disruption may be worth it, but without a TMIC its entirely possible not having a scoop is better.
Or I could be full of shit. That is a very real possibility.

Cough cough I like this sort of styling cough...
Well, I'm not a blobeye fan, but blobeyes do look better without a scoop, and I'm not an STI rally wing fan. So there you go. Yeah he should.

All the hipsters are putting more wings on.

Not saying that you're advocating this — just throwing it up there. http://rusubaru.com/intercooler-ef…
![]() 10/28/2013 at 21:10 |

Well, I suppose you could stick an oil cooler or something up there, but, yeah.
![]() 10/28/2013 at 21:36 |

keep them both. Factory look is good.
Either way, it won't look as good as an Evo. Not a "fanboy" or anything (I'm a Volvo/Mazda/McLaren/Ford/Jaaaaaaag/Aston Martin/Land Rover fan myself), just like the the Evo's looks better. Also, most Evo owners I've encountered tend to be about a decade older than their Subaru compatriots, and thus seem blessed with greater maturity and experience.

A WRX without a hood scoop? Someone wants to get into a slap fight.
flails hands intimidatingly
![]() 10/28/2013 at 22:48 |

Whoever wrote that seems a little biased towards TMIC- but here's a very simple reasoning for which intercooler you should choose:
High RPM boost, you want a FMIC.
Lower RPM boost, you want a TMIC.
As the article states, TMICs are much more prone to heat soak (so much so, in fact, that STIs come with a water-spray nozzle for the scoop) which isn't good for high boost pressure.

It is true. Immediately inside the hood the scoop is divided in to 2 portions. About 80% of the air is directed to the top mount inter cooler. The remaining 20% is directed to the turbo for cooling not for air intake. If you're looking at the scoop from the front of the car the left side is the smaller side for turbo cooling.

Tell him to find another one, because modded WRX/STI's are an extremely risky buy. You can almost guarantee any of these three: 1. low quality parts that will break 2. badly tuned 3. driven to shit and the motor is about to die.
Find a clear title vehicle with no mods and have it inspected by a well known shop, with an emphasis on doing a compression test on the motor. Then have fun.
