"Mosqvich" (mosqvich)

My in-laws are strongly considering a 2014 Hyundai Sonata. They like how looks and rides. However, I have a lot of issues with it and have found plenty of evidence to back-up why it's not best for them. The problem is that my Father-In-Law pretty much only listens to Consumer's Reports. Does anyone have any quote from CR? I don't have a subscription. Shocking, I know.

I have a 2012, GL-6MT. And although I love MINE, I would never buy another or suggest it to anyone. 27k miles and
cruise control works intermittently
I have weird issues with the radio control buttons
that's about it but started this bullet point thing so I'll just kinda own it.
Yolo.

Look at a Ford Fusion instead.

What in your opinion is better for them?
Answer to all life problems is E39 5 Series, the best car EVER made.

Actually, I want them to have AWD (they have a steep driveway) and a small SUV type vehicle for better visibility, easier ingress/egress. My Mother-in-Law likes the BMW X1. It's easy for here to get in and out of and it gets reasonable fuel efficiency, plus BMW provides bumper-to-bumper maintenance for 4 years/50k miles and you can upgrade it to 6 yrs/100k miles.

The ingress/egress is a problem they're not considering, see my note to RickyD. Plus, I'm tired of my Ford dealer and the crap they pull constantly.

Actually it sometimes has trouble going into first. and pulls a bit to the left.

Seriously, how is ingress/egress an issue if they're considering a Sonata?
We have a 2013 Fusion; it's solid. Quiet, comfortable, roomy, and built very well. Interior isn't cheap either. You get a lot for the money and it actually handles somewhat decent... also, available AWD

Went from a 6 speed Boxster 987 to an E39 auto after I tore my acl and I swear I a much more comfortable cruising at speed in the BMW

From Car and Driver:
"Throughout its 17-month stay with us, the Sonata was said to be pulling to the left, pulling to the right, sometimes hard, sometimes slightly, and then not at all—occasionally all on the same trip. An astounding six alignments couldn’t fix it. The left front strut was replaced twice with reportedly revised parts. Then both struts were replaced. The dealer’s service department said there was no fix for the steering’s self-centering weirdness. Then three months later we were called back in so a factory field engineer could perform an update and “preference change” to the steering feel."

Because they shouldn't be considering a sedan at all. They need to be able to slide in and out without having to struggle - they're in their 80s. They have a Lexus 300 and it's hard for them to get in and out of. They also have a Nissan Frontier, and it gives my Mother-in-Law fits.
The bottom line is they're making their purchase decision on what they saw in someone's driveway and Consumers Report's fairly positive review. This is why I'm looking for CR's long term look at the car - if it exists.

Mazda CX-5?
Subaru Forester?

Seriously. Other than moving furniture, I'm not really sure what my car isn't great at. The quality still feels a step above most modern family sedans, it's got more than enough acceleration for a daily driver, it handles road trips like they're nothing, and it corners so predictably. It's like driving an extension of myself.

Have you considered that it might not fit within their budget? Best thing to do is get them to drive your suggestion in some way or another.

Not only does the Mazda6 exist, but this person is apparently considering something other than the Camry or Accord. Getting your friends to step outside of the Toyota/Honda camp is usually the hardest part.

We drove the X1 and she loves it. He's stuck on CR.
They have plenty of money. It'll be a cash purchase.

Mazda is a possibility. They do like Mazdas. The Subaru probably would be a non-starter.

If they love the car, and it comes with a warranty. What is the issue? You've got to dig deep and find your inner salesman. Gently sway them to the BMW side.

LOL! We're working on them. They're in no hurry. My father-in-law's days of driving are quickly coming to an end. He's the one who thinks he wants a Sonata. My Mother-in-Law in inclined to go my way. I'm going to build the case.
Interesting bit of history: his first car was a brand-new Triumph TR3, followed by a new Triumph TR4 that he bought on deployment to Vietnam. My wife learned how to drive on his Porsche 911. See where I'm going with this? How does someone with this level of automotive provenance and a fair amount of money choose a Hyundai? The Lexus they have was purchased barely used. It has a manual tranny, which is getting hard for my Mother-in-Law to drive. I drove it a few days back and lit up the back tires :-) I'll be able to sell it easily.

The pulling issue was mainly on 2011-2012 sonatas.
