I vote the VQ37 in the G37 sedan. I was on a fantastic twisty road in North Jersey and found a tunnel. Needless to say I came out the other side with a grin that went ear to ear :-D. The induction sound is incredible, but couple that with the exhaust sound all reverberating off the tunnel walls at 7,500rpm, and you have yourself a one hell of a sound.

Wait .... from the reviews I've seen it seems like most journalists don't like the sound of the VQ engine.

EDIT: Taking the porsche comment out .... damn brain.

Yeah I don't understand that. Perhaps the Nissan 370Z has a different sound? I know the G37 coupe sounds different than the sedan. Also, Porsche uses a flat 6, not a V6. Different type of engine.

LOLOL no. The VQ series engines produce an ugly wail. I cringe whenever that engine note enters my ears. My parents have a G37x sedan and not only is the engine note off but it's too harsh and buzzy to be in a luxury car (then again that could be the work of the transmission and suspension in the G as well). Not a fan.

I do like the Lotus Evora (Toyota) exhaust note.

Yupp my brain stopped working with the Porsche comment, sorry.

But I just remember some reviewers saying the sound got worse when the engine grew .... but like you said that might just be on the Z.

You're thinking of the VW engine. The Audi 3.2L has separate cylinder banks and is a more V6-ish V6 if that makes sense haha.

The VQ used to sound fantastic...back when it was a 3 liter engine found in the Maxima (I owned a '99 SE).

In the years that followed I test drove various Nissans and Infinitis as the VQ's displacement got pumped up and the horsepower jumped...they had more punch, but they always sounded and felt SO coarse next to that beautiful VQ30. I loved to sing and it revved so freely and easily. Ah how I miss that engine.

So no, I do not like the VQ37's soundtrack at all.

The VR6 doesn't count IMO as it has more in common with an inline-6.

I'll have to go with the S4. Small displacement V6's always sing a sweeter song.

Edit: oops, NA V6...then Audi's 3.2 liter V6 it is.

The S4's V6 is force fed by a supercharger.

I know , I've driven one. See my edit.

not that the blower will affect the engine note, if you discount the faint supercharger whine.

From the inside the induction sound is great. The exhaust sound seems to be largely disliked.

Does aftermarket exhaust count? if so, I nominate the 3.6 Pentastar. Chrysler factory exhausts are rubbish, but with the right pipes, it can sound phenomenal

I dunno if they've changed it for the G37/37oZ, but in my 350Z, the engine sounds pretty damn bad inside the car, while it sounds glorious from outside.

That may be what you're thinking of.

Kinja'd!!!0

Crazy. I own a 350Z. I can understand not liking the way the exhaust sounds from outside, but I think it can be universally agreed upon that it sounds like shit from inside. This may have changed for the VQ37, but my VQ35 just kind of sounds like a blender from inside.

I do love the "distinctive" exhaust note from the outside though.

I think a VQ with the right exhaust can indeed sound about as mean as they come. But that is just like....my opinion man.

Really? I could of swore in the videos I was talking about they were referring to when the engine grew from the 3.5 to the 3.7. Never knew.

10/28/2013 at 15:32

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah, they may have worked on the interior sound for 3.7, so its entirely possible i'm wrong. Lord knows it needed an improvement. Seriously, to me and anyone in my car, it sounds like a giant blender when i floor it.

2011+ V6 Mustang of course. Ford did some kind of magic with the exhaust system.

small disclaimer: I own one.
