Went and looked at another Protege5 for my friend. This one (pictured) has surprisingly good wheels and is in a good color. IRL it was in worse condition than it looked. Some clearcoat was pealing off on the door handles, the roofrack on the driver's side was cracked, and there was some curbrash on the wheels, and a dent on the lip of one of them (not too bad though). So, mainly cosmetic things. Mechanically it looked solid, although we couldn't start it this time because the dealer was closed on Sunday! Anyway, besides that, I cut my finger open with an electric hedge trimmer (so this is hard to type) and I diagnosed someone's check engine light with my bluetooth OBD2 adapter. The 02 sensor is borken (yes I meant to say borken), and the engine is knocking because of that. Oh! And on my way home from seeing the car, there was some dually towing a absolutely massive camper, and he was doing 85, truckin past everyone. What a tool. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

Judging by the foliage, am I correct in guessing you're in a warm climate? I ask because that generation of Protege was alarmingly prone to rusting in places where they salt the roads. And as a Saab owner (I've got to stop constantly identifying myself as one) I support your use of the term "borken".

Go drive it when they're open. Don't worry about cosmetic shit :)

Ah yes I know of this rust problem very well. Everyone tells me about it, but yes, I live in Tennessee and the roads aren't salted very often, if at all. So, there usually is no rust on these cars, and this is no exception, the underside was clean as....a clean thing.

I know, that's what I told my friend. Because of the cosmetic stuff though we can ask for some more money off :D

That's good to hear; there's a couple of TTAC articles ( here and here ) that caught my eye about those cars. I need to start buying my cars from the south more often; the body shops ought to give me loyalty cards based on all the rust repairs I'm having them do.

Dang look at all that rust. Yeah, I can see the problem. Trust me though, this one was rust free.

If it's a manual, make sure to give the tranny a good workout, be rough with it. Especially if someone young learned to drive/hooned it. The one in my Mazdaspeed Protege gave no warning and sploded 4 days after I bought it, and it is the same transmission as a regular Protege, albeit with a limited slip diff, and I didn't test it thoroughly enough to find out on the test drive. Could have saved myself 2 grand and 3 months of headaches.
