Nissan VP Andy Palmer Trash Talks Subaru BRZ, Is 50 Years Old

Oh yes, he's doing this. 50-year-old man and Nissan executive vice president Andy Palmer is bringing the hurt. Let's hope he's got an industrial strength flamesuit, because this is going to be intense.

When !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! about the rear-drive sports car market, Mr. Palmer rhetorically asked,

"Do we have any competitors?"

But he's well aware of the latest offering from Toyota and Subaru, winning the hearts of automotive journalists and consumers alike.

"...the Subaru [BRZ]? It was a car designed for a 50-year-old. It’s for a midlife crisis. That’s not what we do.”

Damnnn. He continued,

"You’ll see the answer to the midlife crisis. Except it won’t be for the midlife crisis.”

Nissan is set to debut their new !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! concept at next month's Tokyo Motor Show. So where there's fighter concept cars, there's fighting words. Andy Palmer could be civil about this. He could be nonchalant about Nissan's devious plans. But instead he's letting his mouth write a check. Next month, we get to see if that check has any hope of being cashed.

It seens Mr. Andy Palmer it's just an ordinary executive, not a car guy. Or its only jealous.

Can't blame him. Nissan bean counters must have convinced him that car enthusiasts don't need a affordable RWD sports car. It won't sell.

Toyota and Subaru are laughing right now

Seeing his in-depth analysis of the BRZ, I'd wager that he likes his cars to be much more comfortable. Maybe he's mad that he won't fit the seats? What do I know?

While there are some bits about the BRZ/GT86 that I find a bit obscene (exhaust tips, rear bumper), it's certainly not aimed at the midlifer crowd. Those buy Porsches, Audi convertibles or SLs for all I know.

I'd love to know what VP Palmer himself drives, what personal car(s) he runs.

What's funny is that Nissan was the one who opened up the very market (by killing the lightweight Z back in 1989, and then refusing to offer the SR20DET in the 240sx before killing it outright in '98).

I am fully confident that if they had made a RWD 2.5l QR25DE lightweight coupe back in 2005, instead of shoving the expensive VQ into everything, the BRZ would have flopped by comparison. Now they're playing catch-up.

He has just revealed both his ignorance of the latest data on the BRZ/FRS buyer profile and his misunderstanding of the market he is charged with selling to: Those cars are attracting some of the youngest buyers in the industry and has begun a big positive change in attitude toward each of those brands among younger shoppers. Since those shoppers are his target and are fans of this competitor's car, it might be better to flatter rather than insult their choices.

Had he consulted his strategic planning data beforehand there's not a chance he would have said this.

I hate the term "Midlife Crisis". Only guys ever have them apparently. You know what a midlife crisis is? It's a guy getting what he wants, not what everyone else expects him to want. You see a 20yo in a 86 and it's ok, put a 40yo in the same car and he's having a crisis.

Kinja'd!!! Random Commenter > PRBot II

It's for people who are having a mid life crisis, eh? Funny... Every single time I've seen an FR-S or a BRZ, it was either being driven by someone in their mid to late 20's, or someone in their early 30's... I have yet to see a middle aged man in one in person.

Nissan doesn't have one car that interests me anymore... The only car they have that comes close is the GT-R, and many people end up not liking the GT-R because it's like driving a car in a video game, your in control, but you just feel like your along for the ride. Sure, technically, it's an amazing car, but that doesn't mean it's necessarily an exciting car to drive.

If Nissan wants to make a Toyobaru competitor, they should make a new 240sx. I doubt they will though.

Who is the 370Z for? I can answer that as I was behind one heading east-bound on I-70 in MD today. It's for someone in their late 50's to early 60's who doesn't know a goddamned thing about cars and likes to drive very, very slow in the passing lane while talking on a hand-held cell while his bored (and none-too-easy-on-the-eyes) wife looks out the passenger side window in a desultory manner at the people passing them on the right while giving them the stink-eye.

I don't get how calling a vehicle a "mid life crisis car" is an insult. So it is an attractive sports car that grow men purchase to feel younger. Seems to me like a mid life crisis purchase is an insult to the person and their reasons for buying it, not the product. And like many people have pointed out it's not a very accurate discription. When I hear mid life crisis car I think of flashy some what expensive sports cars like the corvette, M3, or viper. Not a sub $30,000 miata/S2000 fighter.

The company does something as batshit insane/stupid as thinking there's a market for a convertible crossover, is convinced that there ISNT one for an affordable RWD sports car.

Even if Nissan's is better, it's BRZ all the way because F the market: the Toyobaru was built to make us happy, and guess what? The money followed.

This car is the result of Nissan's hand being forced, not because the CEO wanted it done to be a boss. It feels tainted.

No, and no. By this logic, because the Miata exists, the BRZ/FRS would flop. Doesn't quite work that way.

Plus the 240SX was always good 200-300lb heavier than the FR-S. It's pretty silly to think the modern incarnation of that car would be closer to the FR-S than say, the Genesis. In that context the VQ makes way much more sense. My Z would not be much more fun w/100 less HP and ~150lb less on the nose. The Z was only a sports car for 1 generation. I agree that he's writing a check this car might not be able to cash. If it's based on the FM chassis it's probably gonna suck. There's not much room to cut weight from the G/Z without spending money, so if this has the QR it's gonna be a dog. A Genesis coupe without the turbocharger.

In today's shocking headline, a guy decides to suggest that he's unimpressed by his competition.

Why is this a big deal? It's a Nissan exec saying he doesn't like a Subie. That's exactly what he should do, since he's not Alan Mulally

That is a really good list, and having the maxima on there is lowering its value sir.

There is no such thing as a midlife crisis. It's only, I finally have enough money to get the things I've always wanted.

If Mr. Palmers ideas of life other than a midlife crisis should involve a squishy beige sedan, he can go throw himself into an incinerator. We do not need that kind of thinking from a VP of a major car company.

The Miata is a convertible, much lower power, and a 2-seater instead of a 4-seater, so they occupy a very different market than the Silvia , 86, and Z.

The 240SX curbweight: 2698lbs
FR-S/BRZ weight: 2758lbs

So no, the 240SX was not heavier, and had more power from the S13 generation on.

The VQ is not going to be used for the Z, and it actually doesn't make sense at all. The VQ37VHR is making 94 HP / liter without direct injection and maintains a 7600 rpm redline. That's pretty much done. Without turbos (which means a significant increase in cost) there's no way for them to safely get more HP out of it. Direct injection on the existing Z engine would push it to around the BRZ's level, improving it only by about 25 HP.

By comparison, the QR25DDT that they're going to be using is a direct-injected turbo that, to make the same 350HP as the current VQ, at the same RPM, needs to only run 7psi. Chances are, they'll have it rev to 6000rpm and run it at 10psi, to make 300HP. That's a way more reliable setup than trying to get more HP out of the heavier, high strung VQ engine.

But they also expect the weight to come in at 2850 lbs. So even at a conservative 300HP, it has a better power/weight ratio than the current 370z.

Remember that the SR20DET, without direct injection and being nearly 30 years older, made 250HP out of 2 liters. With 2.5l, the QR can make (assuming they ahve the same specific power) 312HP.With direct injection usually offering a 5% power bump, we can expect 330 HP (which is the number they cited to journalists) to be reasonable. That will certainly make the next Z faster than the previous Z. That gives it a better power/weight ratio than the far more expensive Mustang GT too.

Also, I've driven the S30, S130 and Z31, and they're all significantly sportier than the "sports cars" (benchmark: everything made in america at the time, 2000s Civic Si) that were sold around its time. It seems like it became a GT because it seems like the wheelbase got longer, but in reality, it had a tiny (90 inch) wheelbase to begin with, and it didn't increase the wheelbase (2+2 excluded) until the Z32. The BRZ's wheelbase is 101 inches, which is 11 inches longer than the S30, S130, Z31, 6 inches longer than the Z32, The Z33 lengthened the wheelbase considerably to 104 inches, and the Z34 brought it down to 100 inches.

But the Z32 was also the first Z with 4 wheel steering and a limited slip differential, so even as a more "GT" car, it had great handling.

So if the requisite for sports car is "short wheelbase, light weight, good handling, and powerful motor", the only one that violates these are the Z33 and Z32.

Funny, since my grandparents all drive Nissan Maximas and Altimas...

Secondly, I'm 18 and personally love the BRZ/FRS/GT86... And so do my friends. I havent gotten the chance to drive one, but I've ridden in one and seen a few heavily modified ones and I just can't imagine people in a midlife crisis going for this car. I see them going for more muscle cars. And don't get me wrong, I love muscle cars, but hey I can admit that my dad just went out and bought a Challenger, because midlife crisis.

Not sure where this guy is even coming from saying that this is a midlife crisis car. It's a very nicely priced enthusiast's car.

It takes a mid life crisis sufferer who's managed his money well to buy a new Corvette. You're looking at 60 grand with a few options.

What's wrong with a Sentra coupe with a 3.5 and a manual? Sure it's front wheel drive but it's still a pretty slick car.

I doubt it. Any Nissan/Infiniti I've found with a manual transmission has been disappointing and seemed designed more for image than anything actually engaging, and comments just like show just where the company's head is at (and how far). And I've owned two Nissans, but none since the Renault marriage.

In his defense, the car did 0-60 in a little over 13 seconds with him driving so he might feel it's a bit underpowered. On the plus side, him sitting in the car did get rid of the wheel gap that so many people seem thrown off by.
