But, what you're not realizing is two things:
1: the G8 wagon could be a lower cost alternative (granted with marginally less performance) and;
2: It's looking like there won't be a new Cadillac CTS wagon. Hence, Pontiac could step up to the plate there.

1) The SS = The G8 GXP more or less, and it starts at $45k. An SS wagon (which is totally not happening) won't come at less-than-or-equal-to cost.
2) If by 'step up to the plate' you mean, 'offer cars no one wants to buy', Pontiac was doing that for ages, which is why they went away. As much as it pains me to say it, the CTS-V simply isn't selling in acceptable numbers to warrent a next generation. We here are opposite lock are glad it exists, but few outside the enthusiast echo chamber would take it over a fully loaded Escalade. That's the problem.

The Pontiac G8 would have come in at a much lower price (~$45,000 compared to ~$65,000). They are two different vehicles on two different platforms in two different classes. One is an upscale family car, the other is a full luxury car.
The CTS-V isn't as useful as a wagon for its size compared to the G8 wagon. Just look at the cargo capacities (58 cu ft vs 70 cu ft). The CTS-V is 192" long, 58" high, and 72.5" wide, while the G8 wagon is 192.8" long, 58" high, and 74.8" wide. Both are really close size wise, but the G8 is packaged better. It turns out that a lot of luxury wagons are packaged poorly for cargo capacity, and hold less than an average hatchback with a rooftop box.
The CTS-V may be a better performance car, but the G8 would make a better wagon.

This is because luxury wagons are lifestyle choices, not strictly practical purchases.
If you want a practical and affordable people-plus-cargo hauler, you buy a minivan. The G8 wagon looks like an impractical pig compared to a minivan. Hell, it doesn't look so great compared to a crossover or even a big SUV. The only thing a wagon has going for it over a minivan or "utility" is sporting character, which too few people care about.
You should have bought a Dodge Magnum when you had the chance.

This is just a reply not directed.
First off you all need to realize what you want is a Holden, Pontiac is no more and all the G8 was is a rebaged Holden. That is what you want a Holden embrace it and press for that. Ute will never happen if they do import them Chicken Tax..

The chance of the Commodore wagon coming to US shores badged as a Holden are even less than it coming to US shores badged as a Pontiac. The best chance would be to have the wagon tag along with the new Chevrolet SS, and even that seems slim. The Ute is being killed off in 2016, so there is also very little chance of those being brought over.
Oh well, these are just more cars to add to the list of vehicles to import in 25 years.

That thinking is exactly why we hardly have any decent or affordable wagons here anymore. Maybe you would choose a minivan over a wagon, but some of us don't need a bloated cow of a vehicle for people-plus-cargo hauling. You seem to forget that the people commenting here care about sporting character (except for off-road vehicles, but, that's a different matter).
Almost every modern crossover or SUV is so over-styled that they look hideous (there are a few exceptions), and the minivans resemble oversized refrigerators. You can't seriously think that any of those look remotely good compared to the clean lines of a wagon.
You must have missed the part in the main post where I said a G8 wagon would be the only modern American car I would have seriously considered. The Magnum was an uninspiring car from one of the worst periods of Chrysler's existence. Its only redeeming qualities were the fact that it was a wagon, and its V8.

A garage of G8 wagon & G8 ute would be just about perfect. Of course, while I'm dreaming, they'd both need manual transmissions.

I didn't miss the part of the main post where you basically told the auto industry that you aren't going to buy a new American car. I also didn't miss the part in your comments where you pegged that you're not in the market for a high-profit premium product and you're extremely particular. That thinking is exactly why we hardly have any enthusiast-oriented niche vehicles anymore.

I very well realize that we are in the minority. The fact that we aren't in the majority is one of the reasons the market is the way it is, which is a shame. However, that minority exists as a majority on Oppo. Some may view us commenters as weird, but in reality, someone who would rather have a wagon or shooting brake over an SUV or minivan is considered normal here. I'm more than the happy considered weird by the general population, and embrace it.
Also, I may be particular, but that is how you end up with a vehicle you don't hate.

I've most recently been driving an 09 Forester (family's, not mine), and its one of the few crossover/SUV I really like. It's a really good compromise of good driving dynamics and large cargo capacity. It drives like a lifted wagon, and is actually fun to drive. Besides, if you get tired of the ground clearance, STi suspension swaps in quite easily. That's not a priority with an N/A, but it would be one of the first things to get done if it was a turbo.
In fact, these look pretty good on STi suspension. It makes it more like a tall wagon and less like a crossover.
