There is a 1994 Toyota Supra Turbo 6MT with 103K miles near my house for sale for $31,800. I'm considering of buying, but what are your thoughts on it?

Kinja'd!!!

http://www.diamondmotorworks.com/detail-1994-to…

By the way, check out the dealer... 6 Supra's for sale!

There's a nicer one with less miles on it also for sale for around $45K, but that one is out of my budget.

By the way, Oppo doesn't like Supras. As the biggest Supra fanatic around these parts, I can tell you this with certainty: 100% NP

$45k for a Supra! I've said it before, I'll say it again: in some alternate universe where the Fast and the Furious never went into production, that $45,000 Supra is on sale for $22,500 and is bone stock.

Don't get me wrong. There's lots to like about the last-gen Supra, but I still think prices are omgwtfbbq

But I do understand that in the end, something is worth what somebody will pay for it, so, shrug.

The F&F crowd does not even inflate the prices, though. The supra has class, and it's qualities really speak to certain people while they do not as much to others. It seems irrational to many, sure. But just because quantitative measurements of the Supra's ability, luxury, styling, reliability, and feel do not completely justify price-

well now that I put it that way, the Supra does seem like good value from an objective standpoint. The F&F crowd only draws away from the good characteristics. They do not play a role in the regard for the Supra that those who truly appreciate the car for what it is (and are able to vote with their wallets).

/end fanboy rant.

You won't lose much money.
When I was a body and paint apprentice back in the 90s we had two of these roll into our shop.
Both were spanking new and had severe hail damage.
The sticker was 49,xxx on one and a bit over 50k on the other.
Both were slushbox cars.
Point.
The point is that if it was 50k new and it's still commanding 30k after 20 years..
It might be worth it.

Although I would never use the word fanatic to describe my liking of Supras, you're not alone in liking them. This 94 Turbo 6-spd would probably be my ideal stock Supra. Meanwhile on the opposite end of the stock spectrum...

inb4 this is practically just a car that somewhat resembles a Supra on the outside and the similarities stop there.

If that were the case, the 300ZX Twin Turbo wouldn't be selling for half the price. It's a significantly more sophisticated, modern, and beautiful car. It cost quite a bit more than the Supra too, when it came out.

The F&F crowd can heavily influence price because they reduced damand considerably. The same happened to 4WD Turbo Eclipses, which became a lot more rare in a few years after that movie came out. If you suddenly drop the supply of a good car considerably, prices are going to jump. The movies also increased overall demand, and that too will make the prices skyrocket.

This is what you should spend 30k on. More reliable, just as much power, less weight, appreciating better, more rare, and a far more expensive car when it first came out. ($84,000 vs $40,000) Not to mention that $30,000 will get you a 'decent' stock supra at high mileage, whereas $30,000 will get you an awesome and clean NSX with much lower mileage. Wheras the Supra has very little to go in terms of over-valuation (clean stock examples are selling for the same as showroom examples), a clean driving NSX is still $30,000, whereas a super-clean NSX is easily $70,000, giving you an idea of how much it can still appreciate.

Realistically, unless you're okay with burning money, the Supra needs to be set aside and come down to earth first. It makes no sense that a car that cost less than half of what an NSX cost the same year, with no improvement in performance, beauty, luxury, technology, or build quality, should still sell more than an NSX.

It's just my two cents, but I suggest you buy cars that are going to appreciate, not ones that are already overpriced. It seems to me like a lot of dealerships have been holding onto Supras for a while, getting ready to sucker people with clean examples that appreciated like crazy.

That being said, $30,000 can build you a car way faster, comfortable, and rarer than either of those if you know what you're doing.

I understand that the wealthier end of the F&F group was able to increase prices to an extent through diminishing the supply, but it was to a short extent. The person buying a nice, $30k Supra is paying that much because it is a time-tested and well-aged automobile with fantastic performance capability. I love the Z32 300ZX as much as the next guy (it is on my top 10, maybe even top 5), but it ain't the real McCoy (McCoy being best Japanese super/sports car). It breaks much more frequently, hasn't aged quite as well, isn't quite as pleasing to drive or quite as fast, but appeals to the masses. The production figures are much higher, therefore it's something everyone should love and most can buy. The Supra is a much more polarizing car. In some, it evokes great emotion for its origin and era, while in others, it evokes the "wow, what a hyped up just decent sports car." The 300ZX was expensive, but not as expensive—a very well equipped '89 turbo went for $35,000, and that's when they were all the rage. As mentioned in another comment, Supras were priced astronomically, bringing me to my point: an exclusive car that is very special to some will have an exclusive value that is worthwhile for a minority, but reasonable because that minority will find it reasonable. The 300ZX is more abundant and has less luster to its large following than the Supra has to its smaller following (which mostly excludes F&F crowd, because the Supra is unattainable to most of them), thus lower prices. A car must stand out to be a legend, even if every other car in the group is legendary in its own right.

That probably looks like I've been talking out of my ass. I don't think I was, but who knows? Maybe I am so engrossed in my enthusiasm I don't realize it.

Anyways, I must end this with the ceremonial song.

The thing is, the Supra isn't special. It came out 3 years after the 300ZX, had just as much (if not less) power, weighed a little less, but didn't have the extremely low drag coefficient, 4-wheel-steering, computer adjustable suspension, etc. of the 300ZX. The 300ZX utilized a parallel turbo setup, which was pretty radical for even the mid 90s, much less the 80s, and had been in development since 1984, when the first Z31 came out. It was the first car to break the 276HP gentleman's agreement (both on and off the books, the R32 came out slightly later) and it was the first car to be completely modeled and designed using a computer (a CRAY supercomputer, at that).

I think the real reason for the hype is that the 300ZX was designed for the European and American market, in hopes of getting Japanese sports cars to be taken seriously. It wasn't a huge hit in Japan and was reserved largely for those who wanted a Japanese Ferrari but the NSX was too expensive. The Supra had a much bigger following in Japan, since the engine was more easily tuned (since it had been around a lot longer, and more cars were using sequential turbos instead of parallel).

Because of its greater popularity in Japan, when tuners in the US looked toward Japan for what to build a few years later, the Supra was de-valued, relatively cheap, and found to make tons of power. It wasn't as complex as a Skyline, yet more plentiful than a 300ZX. This caused the surge in value that the F&F crowd used in their film. When that film came out, the supra was the "underground" choice for people who wanted to build a tuner car that could beat Ferraris, at a fraction of the cost. It isn't that anymore, but the 300ZX still is.

Different tastes for different individuals, but that's my theory about the price jump.

And to fight fire with fire:

Haha, touche with that commercial—it's probably my all-time favorite. And how is it that every time we have a discussion there end up being multiple paragraphs written? Anyways, I have to respectfully disagree with a few statements:

Power wise, all Japanese sports cars followed the 276HP B.S. Here, however, the Z32 turbo had 276 BHP, whereas the Supra sported 320.

-Z32 0-60: 5.0-6.0s (depending on car) vs MkIV 0-60 of 4.6-4.9

-Same top speed

-Supra placed far better in lap times

-300ZX and Zs, as far as I have known, is quite revered in Japan whereas clean Supras end up in the scrapyard much more frequently (again, my inferences). They command the same prices on car-exporting sites

Anyways, it's all about taste and perspective. I think many aspects of your argument are valid and effective in supporting your idea. Cheers!

I totally get it. I think the Supra is brilliant. It's from the best period at Toyota, when everything they touched turned to a car that would run forever. If I had 30k and liked black, I'd do it.
