You know when those rare, limited build cars are sold, you barely ever see them and always wonder what they are like to live with and own? Well we went and found out - Our first in the series is the BMW 1M.
!!! UNSUPPORTED LINE BREAK IN HEADER !!!
Sum up the BMW 1M in just 100 words.
I think the 1M is a modern interpretation of the original M3, a small compact package with back to basics driving characteristics, providing fun every time you drive it. The attention it draws is quite amusing, even now people keep asking me what it is because it looks so different from the regular 1 series. The fact that it can go up against so called fast cars, and win, underlines how satisfying the car is to own. Add the exclusivity of being a limited build, with reasonable running costs makes this in my opinion the performance bargain of the decade!

I love the first gen 1 Series. For short time they were the Ultimate driving machines, even the hatchbacks, if you got them with the right engine that is. I also like the styling, which evolved the E46 one very nice. I just can't look at current generation 1 Series without the want to puck. 1M is very special car, because most of it was bought by the hardcore BMW enthusiasts and not because of the badge how it is now with the majority of M3 buyers. I am not sure I dislike anything in that car.
Good review overally, but why would you not want to DD it? I will even swallow the not very good fuel economy, just because I will drive a super awesome sport car.

Agreed they are very special cars, some of the styling is a little 'large' for my liking. Like the wing mirrors taken straight from an M3 they look a tad out of place.
The owner doesnt want to drive it daily as he wants to keep the miles down on it. He is after keeping it long term (probably until its a classic!) so the less miles he can put on it now the better.
Saying that though he did just take it on a 3000 mile road trip through most of Europes best driving roads, and the ring.

The next M1 (M2 I guess it will be called) Better not have any of this 'yeah, 4000 cars, that's all we're making' bullshit attached to it. I've no power to stop BMW from pulling that garbage again, but if they do, I won't like it!

I guess its to push prices up in the end! I mean the market was easily there for these to be a full blown production run like an M3...greedy BMW!

I once saw 1M in the highway, the white one.
And it's so gorgeous!
I generally don't really like a coupe, but the 1 m is just beautiful and cute!

Thanks a lot for this article. I love this car sooo much, I am drooling on my tablet.
I just don't think i can afford using it part time only. I owned a RWD RX-8 before and city driving in Quebec's winter can get pretty annoying when it gets icy. RWD driving in the snow is really a lot of fun when you have the space and the knowledge but in the city traffic, forget it.
As a daily driver, I would have to be boring and get a next generation S3 or a TT with Quattro so all the family would feel safe all year round. Ok, "boring" is a strong word: They're also nice rides but they certainly do not give you the same feeling in the guts that does the 1M.

This guy hasn't tracked it and doesn't daily drive it? I have a friend who has one (also in black) and tracks the ever-loving shit out of it. In fact, I have a picture. You ought to talk to him. I believe he even did euro delivery!
