I'd call half of these brands 'good', but even that's a huge matter of subjectivity.

Yeah, they almost took down the US car industry, and they did take down the UK car industry.
Not that I really believe this myself, I've never owned a German or Italian car and am in a Saab phase right now.

After the second world war, we strictly regulated Germany's and Japan's production of military equipment (i.e. we forced them not to make tanks and shit). As a result, a lot of their resources formerly directed towards weapons of destruction shifted to the automotive industry.
There's a case in there somewhere for why we should cut down our abhorrent military spending in the US.
