It's either a Superbike (and you're like 19 years old), or a very expensive and rare car.

It was a SAAB 9-3. They could offer me third party coverage for a mere £11 000 This is the problem with aggregators pushing you around to other brokers over the phone. Some times you end up at agents who just give you a crazy quote because they're not at all interested in having you as a customer.

Insurance is a scam when you're young. I'm 24, college educated, and working as a scientist. No points or tickets on my license and I've never been in a crash. Ever.
How much do you think it would cost to insure something like.....let's say a chevrolet cruze LTZ? Let's also assume I put half down in cash and financed the rest through a very well known bank. How much would it cost for a moderate level of coverage?
......4000$ a year. In comparison, I pay less than 1000$ to insure my apartment, my jetta, and my audi.

Yeah. I've heard that before, but this is just nonsense! Unbelievable that someone would go this high for no real reason.
Did the guy add things like "Insurance for a monkey plugging your exhaust with an apple"?

It's cheating unless that was the best quote you got. There's always some ridiculous quote from those who don't want the business.
The single most ridiculous set of quotes I've had were when I tried to buy this:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1983-Honda…
It's a 550cc, 500kg kei truck with zero crash protection and a top speed of about 40mph. I'm over 30, and wanted 3rd party for SD&P only, on limited mileage of <2k a year. The best quotes were in the £1500 region.

Huh. That's odd, I've never gotten a quote that ridiculous, even when I was looking into insuring a WRX. The worst it ever reached was about $2500 a year, and that was when I was still only 22.

Yup, since birth. As well as there possibly being a mistake in the insurance database regarding the weight - I suspect someone input the lb figure as kg through disbelief - they'd basically just looked at it as 'white van man in a really old van', which must be one of the highest-risk categories around. If it had been treated as a low-powered lightweight classic that you really, really wouldn't want to crash, like I was expecting, it would have cost me under a hundred quid a year to insure.
FWIW, if you're looking for cheap insurance in the UK, the only way to go is with something classic. Anything older than about 25 years old will attract classic quotes at a fraction of the cost of regular insurance. (It's slightly complicated; seems to be to do with when a model was released, more than when a particular car was built. I'm paying £275ish a year on a '91 reg BMW E30 - last of the line - but a 5er from the same year would attract full-whack non-classic insurance.)

Well Michigan is no-fault right now so insurance is 3-4x as high as it is in states right next to us. Like 4000$ was not the ridiculous quote for me, that was the average.

I honestly don't know. I guess it's just a quote they throw at people they don't like or something? Some insurance agencies don't recognize no claims bonuses or experience from abroad and will quote you as a high risk 17 year old regardless.

I'm 21, 5 years NCB and fully comprehensive on my 1.8 1998 mx5 is £600 with 10k annual mileage.

I take it you're not in London? And how do you have 5 years NCB by 21? You could only have had a license from 17, normally, which is four years. Are you one of the exceptions? I know there's tractors for farm kids, and disability. Any others? Armed forces or something?
Get yourself a quote on something classic, and you may be surprised how much cheaper it is - if you can get it at 21. With your NCB and so-on you'd likely pay under £100 a year for a much more powerful sports car than the MX-5.

I live in West Sussex about 5 miles outside brighton. with regards to NCB I should probably have made my situation clearer, I started learning to drive on my 17th birthday in my own car (1988 Polo Ranger) so was insured from day one, £600 is my renewal cost on my birthday in a couple of weeks when I'm 22 which is when I'll have 5 years NCB. Classics don't suit how I'll be using them, insurance wise I do too many miles for it to be cheaper than the MX5 and whilst the MX5 is noisy and not great on fuel it is more comfortable than say an 80's TVR and cheaper to purchase.

Ah right, makes sense. I'm probably the only person who'd notice :)
You're probably right about what's cheaper for you, especially since an old MX-5 doesn't depreciate, but I was just saying that you'd be astonished what you can insure for 10-15% of your current premium. You can't necessarily afford to buy and run one, but a Jag XJ-S 6.0 V12 will be under a hundred quid to insure, for example.

oh absolutely, I was looking at old S-Classes with stonking great engines and making everything legal is not the problem it's maintenance (parts) and fuel. The relatively low risk postcode helps with insurance too, The most I have ever paid is £1400 which was on a 2000 Polo 16v at 19 years old.
