My weeks-overdue review of the VW Tiguan SEL 4Motion is just about done. It needs some final tweaks, but I should probably be able to post it tomorrow. I'd write a review of the Phaeton too, but it's nearly 10 years old, and my massively pro-Phaeton bias might skew things a tad.

I've been a VW guy since 1992 - what has your experience been with the Phaeton? Reliable? Expensive to fix? (often?)

VW Phaeton: the Jagvar Review
100/100
Why would anyone drive anything else?

My first three years of ownership (I'm the second owner; I bought a 2004 model with 54K miles in 2009) were largely hassle-free. I spent about $2-3K a year on maintenance and repairs. This past year has proven expensive because of the big 80K-mile service ($3,500), four new tires ($1,200), and a leaky sunroof that led to interior water damage ($1,300). Worth every penny, in my opinion, but I love it to the point of fanaticism.

Yes, that's why I courteously abstain from that one. :)

I would still like to read the Phaeton review even if you give it a 100/100

Why? Seems like a fair score to me.

Do you have the W12?

Me too.
There was a moment when I was like, hey, why don't I get me a Phaeton?!? Sleeper super car and future classic!
But then, within like 5 minutes of reading up on its reliability issues and maintenance costs (esp. with the VR6x2) I was like :( moving on then

Nope, the 4.2L V8.

I've been tempted by these because it's a nice car that's affordable, but scared off by the potential maintenance cost. (I do most of it except for the really heavy stuff) Fuel too - a 5,200lb tank really needs a TDI otherwise you're stuck with its 14/21 rating. What kind of stuff do you spend the 2-3k annually on?
