Did BMW intentionally make the i8 look like the M1?
Maybe the suits at corporate wanted the i8 to be the high tech successor to the M1.
Or maybe even if they didn't do it this conversation happened around the watercooler in engineering:
Hans: "Isn't it a bummer that ve can't build a proper supercar vit a big petrol engine?"
Frans: "Ja"
Hans: "Then vhy don't ve at least make it look like the M1?"
Frans: "Das klingt wie eine gute Idee!"
Hans: "Oh look it's almost 17:00. Vant to go get some biers?"
Later at the bar:
Hans: "Vat if ze suits see vat ve did and fire us?"
Frans: ":-("
Hans: "I got it! Let's make ze back look like it ate ze damn beetle from Stuttgart!"
Frans: "Lang lebe Bavaria! Lang lebe Bavaria!"

It's a small bit of why I'm buying one. I doubt we'll see a M1 successor in the next 3-4 years, at the earliest (they don't want anything to steal the thunder of their "i" cars). I also get the impression from the hostile relationship between BMW "M" and "i" divisions that money that would have otherwise went into M1 development went to the i8. Can't wait for Feb/March when deliveries start.

It will, "Sophisto Grey" with "Carpo Amido" (black) interior. Ionic Silver is a little too bland (typical bright silver german car), Protonic Blue is a little too flashy, but I like it. And Crystal white is nice, but not my cup of tea.

Skip to 1:38 and you can hear the M1 do a tunnel run:
