A mistake by the safety crew and drivers of two Type-R Civics during the 2013 Lower Silesia Rally (Rajd Dolnolski) had the potential to end very, very badly.

The series of unfortunate events started when Igor Pawowicz's and Marcin cipie's Type-R failed to stay on the road and crashed into a tree while going at a high rate of speed. Since the crash occured close to a safety crew post, they managed to reach the car very quickly and administer first aid to the badly injured and unconcious Pawowicz and cipie.

Following the first car at a short distance was another Civic, driven by the duo Micha Bachula/Mateusz liwa. They managed to stop just short of the accident zone and waited for the way to be cleared, so they can proceed. What both the safety staff and the crew of the second Civic failed to do was to 'hit the emergency button' to alert other drivers to the danger ahead.

57 seconds after the initial crash, a BMW 318 e30 driven by Pawe Roszek and Adam Jaroc came thundering past a blind corner and straight into the Rachula/ilwa Civic. A safety warden standing in the road right behind the parked car did little to help the situation, and after a desperate evasive maneuver the Roszek/Jaroc team put their car into a ditch and then into a tree. It was them who then alerted the other teams to the danger obscured by thick fog.

What we see here is utter disregard for safety protocol. While initialy the safety crew was blamed for not alerting other teams of the accident, it was later established that they did the right thing by attempting to save the casualities from the initial crash. Since the second Civic arrived into the accident zone within seconds, it was Bachula's and liwa's job to 'raise the alarm', something they failed to do. In the end, Bachula and liwa received a 10 minute penalty, Pawowicz and cipie were rushed to a hospital for emergency surgery that saved their lives, and bitter (but luckily uninjured) Roszek and Jaroc were left without a car, as their BMW was written off.

Well, can't say he doesn't have a legitimate reason. He is extremely vocal about his displeasure though.
