...sucks. Fucking Red Sox World Series traffic is the worst. 90 minutes getting home. This city has the crappiest infrastructure to get people in and out (okay, most do). The worst traffic feeling, when you're bumper to bumper and crest a hill...and it picks up because everyone was slowing down because of sun glare. Sun glare! Suddenly a 20 minute commute lasts 45 (helloooooo Tappan Zee Bridge) and it's all because a few people forgot their sunglasses in the morning. Then there's rubbernecking, because we must slow to a crawl to look at the accident carnage across the highway. All the distracted sleepy driving. Uuuuggghhhhhh.
If they don't want to drive, don't want to give the road their full attention, just want to get from point A to point B, I say let them. Take the driving out of their hands. It's sad but I trust your average engineer programming algorithms and building sensors than I do the average driver. Put these in larger tests, make them electric for the economy to please the Greenies (and get me some more snow), then give them to the public.
Because to those that don't want to drive and don't have a public transportation option, they don't get backroads, the purity of driving, how calming and thrilling it can be, how a bad day can turn completely around just by finding the right road. They don't get it, they don't want to get it, they don't have to get it. I'll spread the word, you'll spread the good word, but in the end we won't reach everyone. Safer, quicker commutes sound so good, and more open roads, more time to work on your car and to drive it where you want to, that's icing on the cake.
I long for roads more like this:
And dread the drive home.
