Toyota's !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! small sporty coupe. The snorkel says sport.

The NHTSA refuses to crash-test it for US Import.

They fear damage to the crash wall.

Kinja'd!!!

for the independent businessman who needs snorkel capacity in the desert.

I suppose this is Toyota's VW Bus, a model they'll keep building until somebody outlaws them by requiring something or other. It does seem to have airbags, so that's a few more years at least.

Remember, it's the 1960's small truck tax ("The Chicken Tax") that pretty much make importing a two-seater truck economically impractical.

Ak your congress critter to go choke that chicken if they don't have anything better to do.

That truck is awesome. They probably wouldn't sell too many here, but those of us that would buy one would be so so happy.

The earliest models are kosher for the 25 year now, so if you have the determination, you can get one in the US. Also, the OEM snorkel is still useful in the desert because it is also a precleaner and filters out dirt and dust.

Why, yes, I do keep track of.. wait, 25? I thought it was 15. Crap. So much for that 1998 Mexican Beetle.

A car that is new that is not compliant cannot be imported, but a older, worn vehicle with decades of use=OK. makes sense.

I guess it's better than none at all.

I'd still like to go to Mexico and upgrade my 1974 VW vin plates. Stupid legality.

*illegal immigrants: Drive in in a 1998 Beetle. Not that other one, the old one.

You weren't far off, it's 15 years in Canada. Yes the silliness of the import rules have been discussed at length here and elsewhere. It doesn't make sense as a safety regulation, but it does as a protectionist regulation against the US and Canadian car manufacturing industries. Thanks Mercedes.

On the plus side, both the 70 series and the Beetle haven't changed much in the last 25 years, and what changes were made would be easy upgrades to legal cars.

I've wanted to test out a theory that if you lived near the border, you could pay to have some kind of address in Mexico. Then register whatever car you want there and drive in the states and return once a year to renew the temp import. The biggest hurdle I see is insurance.

Yeah, some models they just don't change anything. A friend has one those giant Dodge vans, a 1983 model. The dash innards were lebeled 1978.

I just like that some models just end up 'legacy'. Too cheap to kill, too classicto update.
