Define "exotic."
![]() 10/23/2013 at 22:47 |
|
Ferrari 456.
Or the ferrari 412
![]() 10/23/2013 at 22:48 |
|
Ferrari California. Just doesnt really inspire me at all.
![]() 10/23/2013 at 22:48 |

Elise.
![]() 10/23/2013 at 22:48 |

Dare I say NSX? It's beautiful like an exotic, but its not flashy. It's mid engined like an exotic, but it's a V6.
![]() 10/23/2013 at 22:49 |
|
Universally lusted after, too expensive for the vast majority to own. Something that stands out for being different. Something any non-car enthusiast would notice.
![]() 10/23/2013 at 22:49 |

I kind of want a Ferrari 456. Why? Cause it's cheap-ish for a Ferrari and everyone can make fun of me for buying it.
![]() 10/23/2013 at 22:50 |
|
An NSX is more expensive than quite a few ferraris.
![]() 10/23/2013 at 22:51 |
|
I would love one. It will be cheaper to own than the 550 since it has a detuned engine and it will still have the 12 cylinder + manual trans combo.
![]() 10/23/2013 at 22:52 |
|
I'd get a 456 over a 360 or 430.
![]() 10/23/2013 at 22:52 |

Would the Corvette and Viper count?
I'm not going to say the Mondial because it is just too awesome.
![]() 10/23/2013 at 22:53 |

Mid Engine: Check
Manual: Check
Rare Nameplate: Nope
Unobtainably Expensive: Nope
Unreliable: LOLOLOL.jpg
Because of the Elise, you can effectively still get one of these new.
![]() 10/23/2013 at 22:54 |

Winner.
![]() 10/23/2013 at 22:54 |

The Viper counts, and I think the ZR1 counts but that's up for debate.
![]() 10/23/2013 at 22:54 |
|
As long as you can find a good one with an MT. So many of them came with slush boxes!
![]() 10/23/2013 at 22:54 |
|
Any Bentley.
![]() 10/23/2013 at 22:55 |
|
True. But still, I would actually be able to drive a ferrari without fear of "losing value"
![]() 10/23/2013 at 22:55 |

If Jalopnik existed in the 80s that would have been the Miata, the answer to everything.
![]() 10/23/2013 at 22:55 |

Pre refresh Gallardo. Styling isn't as good, and frankly it's the special editions that I really want.
![]() 10/23/2013 at 22:57 |
|
I would get any Ferrari over a 360. Including a Mondial
![]() 10/23/2013 at 22:57 |
|
"It's about 10x better than whatever shit you drive." works for anyone who doesn't have a newer Ferrari or equivalent. You will instantly become a asshole rich guy in the eyes of bystanders who here you say this, though.
![]() 10/23/2013 at 23:01 |

Not necessarily, here's one for $25k.

Yeah I wouldn't want to come off that way. I'd rather have a laugh over it if someone told me it wasn't a "real Ferrari".
Elitists don't piss me off, they humor me.
![]() 10/23/2013 at 23:03 |
|
I ca get a couple different ferraris for less than that. I'm not syaing they are better than the NSX in any wya, just saying in terms of cost or rarity, the NSX is actually climbing up there.
![]() 10/23/2013 at 23:06 |
|
Not me, I'd prefer a stock pre-Reventionfied Gallardo. It's subtle and clean (for a Lamborghini). But you are correct, it doesn't even have "Lambo doors". It's pretty un-exotic, aside from the v-10
![]() 10/23/2013 at 23:07 |

Any?
![]() 10/23/2013 at 23:09 |

Nice Camry yo.
![]() 10/23/2013 at 23:10 |
|
Sweet Curvy VW you got there
![]() 10/23/2013 at 23:10 |

It's just a luxury car designed to seem fast just so you spend more money and buy it over the normal GT. Sure it has more power and is lighter but it's still a Bentley. Bentleys should be for luxury and grand touring. Not track driving.
![]() 10/23/2013 at 23:13 |
|
It's not a Camry! It's an exotic!
/hmph
![]() 10/23/2013 at 23:13 |
|
So would Bentleys be exotics then?
![]() 10/23/2013 at 23:14 |
|
Go down to Southern California for about a month. They all become less exotic. Maybe I'm just jaded but They are all really less exotic to me. Really the only thing that gets me with "exotics" is the noise the engine makes.
![]() 10/23/2013 at 23:14 |

Dude, it's grounded to the ground.
![]() 10/23/2013 at 23:16 |

Interesting question. I'm going base R8. Because it's like a Gallardo, only with less engine. And quieter. And more refined. And not as aggressively styled. And nein , you absolutely may not have one in lime green.
![]() 10/23/2013 at 23:17 |
|
Shit, you're right. It's a Camry :(
![]() 10/23/2013 at 23:17 |

I've lived in SoCal all my life. Just because I don't look twice at Galardos doesn't mean the question isn't relevant to everyone else. Especially driving down PCH in Newport/Huntington Beach.
![]() 10/23/2013 at 23:17 |

porsches. not the 911 gt3 rs* type, but the average 911**. it's definitly a sports car, and arguably exotic. yet its so common that I just can't bring myself to count them.
*this may not be a thing, and I don't know the right name for the one that I am talking about or their super car right now.
**or whatever counts as an "average Porsche. again, I don't know enough about their model range to name the right one
![]() 10/23/2013 at 23:18 |

Once I saw 5 (yes, five) of these within 15 minutes of each other.
![]() 10/23/2013 at 23:20 |
|
Unless it's very old or green with a big wing, I don't count them either.
![]() 10/23/2013 at 23:21 |
|
Exactly that was where I lived. It got to the point where Lamborghini's didn't phase me, Bentley's are common place and Ferrari's just were noisey. I think the last high end car I got excited to see was when I got to see a Veyron out on the road getting on the 73 from newport blvd. The second time I saw it it wasn't as majestic as the first. I do still get giddy when there is a Carrera GT around though.

This one is easy...for those who want to blow tons of money without any of the plebes noticing, just go to Germany a drop a bag of cash on one of the big three:
Now, these are great cars, and worthy of the Super title. My definition of a not-so-super-car is one that flies right under the radar. Anything with an Italian badge is going to draw attention, no matter how un-super it is. Most people see BMWs, Benzes, and Audis on their way to work, and they won't notice you flying by in the $140k+ car because it looks to them like a 3-series.
![]() 10/23/2013 at 23:34 |
|
I disagree. Roll up anywhere in one of these and you might as well be in a Ferrari, unless of course you rolled up to a Ferrari dealer...
![]() 10/23/2013 at 23:37 |
|
I didn't say Super, I said Exotic, which by definition excludes those. Exotic cars are going to stand out from a crowd. Also, I think the term for those is "super sedan" not super car.
![]() 10/23/2013 at 23:46 |

ex•ot•ic (gzt k)
adj.
1. not native; introduced from abroad; foreign: exotic foods.
2. strikingly unusual or strange in effect, appearance, or nature: exotic weapons.
These are all rare performance editions of more common cars, and while not as flashy as a lambo, still exotics. That's why they are exactly the least exotic exotics, they don't stand out from a crowd, but are in fact ridiculous and exotic .
![]() 10/23/2013 at 23:47 |
|
While it is a gorgeous, stunning design, I wouldn't say it is all that exotic looking. This thing is insane, but looks so refined, handsome.
![]() 10/23/2013 at 23:55 |
|
The not native part is irrelevant; Corollas are foreign.
I don't think they are strikingly unusual. they are fairly common luxury cars that have dynamite under the hood.
Then again, in southern California where I live, half the Mercedes on the road say AMG on the back so they aren't exactly attention grabbing when you see one. Maybe I'm just jaded.
![]() 10/23/2013 at 23:56 |
|
Not necessarily the M3 and others but it is interesting how BMW, Mercedes and Audi can still hold onto that rare, uncommon status despite being almost the common car in some towns.
![]() 10/23/2013 at 23:58 |

Amazing car, but definitely not exotic. Just another GT car to me.
![]() 10/24/2013 at 00:01 |

As an American,
'
It really bothers me when I hear these are called "exotic" when I see at least 1 every day.
![]() 10/24/2013 at 00:04 |
|
In 2008, Lamborghini sold 1787 Gallardos, BMW sold 2208 M6s.
You are exactly demonstrating why these are the least exotic exotics. Everyone thinks they are so familiar because they see their non-AMG-cousins all over the road.
![]() 10/24/2013 at 00:06 |
|
That's exactly why these are the least exotic exotics on the road. They are worlds apart from a C-class or 3-series, and hardly anyone can tell the difference.
Notice these cars are the halo models for each, excluding the R8 because that one is an outlier.
![]() 10/24/2013 at 00:10 |

IDK, at 565/620 HP/TQ, and a price tag approaching $300k, with that interior...
I'd definitely call it exotic.
![]() 10/24/2013 at 00:11 |

Well The Nissan Murano Crosscabriolet didn't sell very many copies either, but that doesn't make it exotic or desirable. In 2012 Cadillac sold 1934 Escalade EXTs, but I don'e take pictures of them at car shows.
![]() 10/24/2013 at 00:11 |

mine makes choo choo noises when I change gears. (:
![]() 10/24/2013 at 00:30 |

I think the One-77 and the V12 Zagato are extremely exotic. I feel like this car is just a very luxurious GT car. :/
![]() 10/24/2013 at 00:32 |

I suppose, I personally consider all three pretty exotic. The V12 and one-77 definitely moreso.
![]() 10/24/2013 at 00:33 |

If you're gonna name American cars don't forget Cadillac:
The XLR-V is still a very unique exotic American car.

Ferrari 308. They made so damn many of them and you can get one cheap. Now don't get me wrong - I want one.
