I've been wanting one of these for the past year now, but I've never been able to justify the spend. Price is sitting around $350AU since the 3+ came out. Yay? Nay? Is there a better + cheaper option available?

I've been wanting one too. I found out a relative of mine works for them and could get a discount. Now I just need to justify still spending over 200 bucks on it. What could I use it for? Note: I don't do any extreme sports nor do I go to track days, cause I don't know of any near me.

I have a HeroHD, Hero2, and a Hero3 Black. They have been through a hell of a lot with me. My HeroHD works the best, never an issue, the Hero 2 has no sound and I just don't feel like paying for a mic replacement, works great as a secondary if you dont need sound. My H3Black, while the camera itself works great, it has lots of cool features like 4k recording and wireless remotes. The wireless feature DRAINS the battery, and if you don't pay attention and have it setup in one of the 30+ video modes, you will end up with a recording file you cant use (Ask me how I know).
All in all I cant complain, these things have gone through hell with me and keep coming back for more.

Are you using it on a car?
If so, I really like the new Garmin VIRB Elite. It may be more expensive, but it's just as good in video quality and also has GPS functionality. So it records (can be turned off if you want) GPS location data every so often as it simultaneously records video.
When you go to playback the video, or save the video onto your computer, you have the ability to overlay the GPS data with the video. So, you could put your speed, elevation, distance, time, etc. as an overlay in the corner of the video.
I have an autocross video, but can't upload it quite yet, and have my speed, time, and distance overlayed in the corner. Pretty sweet. I had a GoPro 3 and have since sold it for this instead.

Worth it. I even use it when I go on vacation. In the pool, ocean, lake. putt-putt, go karts, driving, flying.

Jalopnik? did a comparison of different brands a while back. Might be helpful.

So far I've enjoyed mucking about with mine. It's a Hero3 Silver, which according to reviews is fairly similar to the top-spec Hero2, so that might be an option.
If you're filming cars though I'd thoroughly recommend a standalone mic. The first two clips of this vid are with the standalone, the second are with the GoPro mic. They sound alright because my exhaust was colossally loud, but anything quieter sounds crap.
Also, with a standalone mic you can place it inside or at the back where it will be less affected by wind noise.
