You have to keep in mind that when the Niva FIRST hit the market, it was indeed sedan-like for it's time. There weren't many other off-roaders that offered at least a modicum of comfort on the market, and even those (Range Rover, G-class) were quite agricultural and still had a long way to go to become the bling bling icons they are today.

Ah, so your point is that it's more a comparative thing than an absolute one. Certainly a higher ratio of comfort to cost than the Range Rover of the time, if for nothing than the RR was decently expensive.

I would even go as far as suggesting that a RR or G-class of similar vintage (this add seems to be from the early '80s, judging by the lady's hair) didn't offer more creature comforts. It's only that the Niva lived on to become a living fossil, that makes it seem uncomfortable now.

First 4x4 with coil springs :) that counts for something

Not even close. The RR was 1970 (vs. 1977), and only gained air suspension in the 90s.

Ah, no probs.

I'll amend that to 'the only dirt cheap 4x4 with coil springs'.

That still counts for something, right?
