Gino Bartali, besides being a bona fide cycling hardman with a long list of accolades, also helped in saving hundreds of Jews during the war by smuggling documents in his bicycle frame on 'training rides'. He never mentioned it after the war.

In the picture above, he can be seen with a proper steel bike. Stronglight crankset, primitive gearshift mechanism, primitive brakes, wooden rims, and spare tire around his torso. This was all he needed for 250km bike races.

Dude thats so COOL! Thank you for sharing this! I am way into cycling history and I haven't ever heard of this! I wonder if others did this as well with him!
