The starter on my Pontiac 400 was originally intended for use with an ignition coil but I moved to an HEI system. There are three wires coming off the starter solenoid, the big battery one and two smaller wires. The chevy engine that came out of my car had already moved to an HEI system so yeah. Any ideas on how to wire my starter motor up?

This page might have a wiring diagram that will help. It's for an earlier year Firebird but it might be the same. http://forums.carcraft.com/70/8106463/gen…

Thanks! So I guess since my car was already wired for an HEI system by the PO I am good to go on the wiring front. Now I just need to figure out what port is not necessary on the relay.

You might want to check that whoever switched it over ran a non-resistive wire. A points ignition needs to have the voltage reduced so they don't burn but you want all the juice you can get to your HEI. Some previous owner of my Camaro just spliced in an HEI connector to the resistive wire. This page talks a little about how to do it correctly, though your engine will run without it. http://www.oldengine.org/unfaq/hei.htm
