Kinja'd!!!

As you remember, back at Saturday i tried to apply as a car reviewer in a local car magazine. And yesterday, i met the editor for a small interview. And then, this morning (it's 7 am here in indonesia), the editor tell me that i got the job. Horrrayyyyyyyyyyyy!!!

Until they tell me that they can only pay me about 10% of my current paycheck. Yes, technically i can deal with it, but..

That 90% is just too precious.

Anyway, should i take it?
They said they'll wait until Friday for my confirmation. And they also tell me that my first job is to drive a Suzuki Wagon R for a week and review it.

And oh, have a Carerra GT that i saw in Dubai.

Depends. Can you meet your needs with what they can pay you? (food, clothing shelter, transportation?)

Is there opportunity for advancement and to make more in the future? (at say 3 months, 6 months, year, etc.)

Will this new job make up for the lack of salary with other perks? (free travel, meals, driving cool cars, etc.).

Me personally, a 90% pay cut would be a deal breaker.

this is the way I see it, you keep your job do journalism in the evening while having a free commuter car.. time to get that classic/sports car with the extra money you are saving..

I mean, if you can make ends meet, you should do it. If you want to be an automotive journalist.

But you have to be committed to that path.

Well, as i said i can deal with it.
And they said if i did a great job i could make more in the future.

Cool cars?
Yes. They said every three months, you got a chance to select whatever new car on the market that you want to drive, as long as the automakers agree to provide the car.
No free meals, but there's free travel. You got a free car for a week afterall, and some fuel cash.

It's not really a holiday, we celebrating some kind of Islamic tradition.

Can you split your time? Can you review during the day/commute and write your reviews on the weekend/night, and then work your regular job too?

Also, did you negotiate the price, or did they just set out the 10% price? Starting wages are almost always negotiable, and just because you can get a raise later on doesn't mean you shouldn't try to get a better starting price.

I posted the finacial question again because most people don't take into account how much money they actually need to just scrape by. If you can take a 90% pay cut and still scrape by you are in the minority.

That being the case, I absolutely would not take this job and I'd start saving/investing that 90% until I had enough "FU" money and just retire as early as I could. That's just me though. I love cars, I love not answering to a boss more. The sooner I can have the money to leave the workforce, the better off I'll be.

If you're really serious about being an automotive journalist, then take this opportunity, and live off of Ramen noodles until you a) can demand more money, or b) find another gig at another publication that pays more money.

Remember that if you are doing something you love to do, then money really isn't a factor.

If it were me taking a 90% hit to my pay check is not a very good proposition, I'd much rather have my full 100% and earn enough money to buy the car that I want.. than be allowed to drive it for 1 week, and give it back. hope that helps. Good luck

If I were in your position, I would only take the pay cut if the new job meant further advancement in the future that my current job can't provide. I'd play it safe and stick with your cell tower job.

This. If you want tobe an automotive writer, only take jobs that point you in the right direction. Ramen, lentils, writing until your eyes bleed.

That is how I became a professional illustrator. Only take the jobs that are in your career track.

The answer is obvious - sell your cars and buy an old miata to drive. Live off that money for a while until you can get more from this job or get a new one.

The problem is, I love all my cars. Kia was amazing fwd first car. Mazda Cosmo is an amazing rotary saloon from the80's, and the CLS is just superb.
