The Puma GTE is a small rear-engined sports car built by a Brazilian company and was exported engine-less to qualify as a kit-car and then a local sourced aircooled VW flat-4 was added to let the car run on its own. Finding one for sale is like seeing a lunar eclipse on the solstice while visiting Stonehenge.
The fiberglass body created what was essentially a good looking Karmann Ghia (aka VW Type 34.) Find this !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! bidding on ebay for $6,901 reserve-not-met with 1 day to go, located in Norman, OK.
At first glance the Puma looks like something styled by some Italians, which it probably was given the founder was a racer and businessman named Genaro "Rino" Malzoni. Precious little information is available on the net but the fiberglass body looks like the Brazilian born son of Ferrari Dino and Alpine A110 parents. Not a bad looking car to hid a VW engine in the back.
If the sound and slowness of a 1.6 liter Volkswagen engine puts you off, then you should probably skip this feature because it is going to be slower than putty in January and sound like it too! The 1.6 liter aircooled flat four is going to be in the sub 100 horsepower range unless you plan on adding significant internal and external modifications.
Evidence of VW parts bin scavenged pieces include VW embossed brake/clutch pedals - but with the limited interior shots included in the advertisement it is hard to get a good idea of the over feel and layout.

The VW engine is both a blessing and a curse. It's terribly under powered, but it's a Beetle engine so parts will never be an issue. Plus it looks like a Dino, an A110, a Fiero, and a 365 GTB Daytona have an orgy and this was the result. Me likey.

I like it a hell of a lot more than that x-box in the background.

There are some for sale for US$6,000 over here.
Then again, they're not in good condition, so this is a very NP.

Somehow you left the Z-cars out of that?

If you don't mind me asking, where is here?

I guess I was mostly looking at the top two pictures when describing it. There's most definitely Z-car in the rear.

The rear? That was the one angle I didn't think it looked so much like it from.
Doesn't have the grille (natch, being rear-engined) or the bonnet bulge, but otherwise the similarity seems very strong to me. If you closed up the grille, they'd be all-but identical.
I assumed to start with that it was a deliberate replica.

How did I not see this until now!?

I give you one chance. This was parked today where I work:

I'm still not sure that's what I'm thinking of. Something's still nagging, saying I've got the wrong lookalike. Something like the Bond Equipe springs to mind, but the resemblance is less strong - I think it's just the fibreglass connection making it come up.

There's definitely something else in it. Maybe some old Lotus?
Here's a different variation of the Puma. Clearly it was heavily influenced by the Z-car.

I just realised the copying went two ways. 80s Alfa Spider, even has the same oxidised paintjob:

Is that a mars rover? The moon...or Brasil? That is my guess without googling Gurgel...or gargling Gurgel...gosh...sounds weird no matter how you say it.

Yep. Brazil. São Paulo to be specific.
I see quite a few Pumas. Even though not that many were made. But people who own them usually drive them.
There's also a convertible Puma that's ALWAYS parked outside a bar near my house. And it doesn't belong to the owner. I pity that car because the guy leaves the top down whenever there's sun. Now the interior is all shot because it sits under the sun all day.

I have wanted one of these for a while. A flat 6 (914 perhaps) or a Subaru engine transplant would do wonders.
But I have no money... so I wish good luck to the one who gets it.

I don't need to buy one, I can just go over to my neighbor's house and look at his
