Well, APR tune is done, my initial impressions below:

(Note: That dyno graph is for the 150hp variant of my engine, but the APR website doesn't have one for the 180hp.)

I am now the proud owner of a 215hp/247lb*ft GTI. Or 209hp/242lb*ft. Or 180hp/172lb*ft. Or, if I can find me some 100 octane, something like 230hp/260lb*ft. Program switching is coooool. I only wish it could be done on the fly, since the current process takes probably 45 seconds and requires turning the car off and on to let the ECU reboot itself.

Still, the 93 octane tune (215hp) is really excellent. Just driving around normally it feels basically stock, but give it some go-pedal and it has plenty of horses to reach extra-legal speeds in no time. Also, 250 lb*ft means rolling burnouts are very much a concern when pulling hard in 1st, although warm tires seemed to take care of that when I did the free trial a few weeks ago. All in all, really fucking worth it, especially with the APR's fall sale going on right now (~$1200 of programs/options for $500 + installation fees).

What kind of diesel revs to 7k rpm?

Nice results.

Where do you live? I wonder if these APR tunes are smog legal in California.

Was the 4 programs and ability to switch worth it? I just went with the one 93 octane program on my AWP. I figured that I would never switch.

They're selling a non-diesel tune with a 1500rpm powerband? Is it designed to work with a CVT or something? No, wait, you said you have gears. WTF? Have I missed something?

Well, since I got all options for free with the APR fall sale, yes, yes it was :p

I'm in Michigan, so none of that to worry about for me. I'd have to look into it more to find out about emissions stuff. If it's not legal, you can get the program switcher and just go back to stock for the test, though.

Oh good point. Even if you were in CA you could use the program switcher for the emissions test.

Enjoy your new power plant. Pretty cool how cheap it is to boost power with a turbo charged engine.

Just from the graph it appears to hold about 85% of it's peak HP rating from 4-7k. That's pretty good. Compare it to other turbo engines and you'd get about the same shape.

Where the hell are you seeing a 1500 rpm power band?

Kinja'd!!! davedave1111 > Übel

Kinja'd!!!0

The graph starts at 1500, peak power is at 3000.

That's the torque curve. The red curve is HP.

Kinja'd!!! Übel > davedave1111

Kinja'd!!!0

First off, that's torque. Secondly, that's not what a power band is.

Peak power is at 3k rpm, and it goes off from there. All over by 4500 rpm. Not sure how you're getting 85% of peak power at 7k rpm - it's below that by 5k. At 7k it's little more than half peak power.

I really don't get the idea behind this tune at all. It would appear to make the car slower for anything other than a 1500-3000 in-gear pull - at least unless you completely changed the gear ratios. That's not too unusual for the bottom end chip 'tuning' programmes they sell to boy racers who know no better, but it is unusual in the price bracket we're talking about. Which is why I was asking about possible other mods to accompany the 'tune'.

OK, I knew I was missing something - for some reason I thought the white line was power, the red line torque. Makes a lot more sense the other way around...

I honestly not trying to be a smart ass, but do you see both the solid and dashed red lines in the chart? The white lines represent torque and the red ones represent horse power.

While you are correct in that the torque peaks low the HP curve raises until it peaks between 5-6k. It is very flat for a power curve.

Yeah, our last answers crossed. I am now aware that I'm an idiot :)

I don't even know how I did that, because I double-checked to start with.

Oh boy, I wonder if the Canadian dealers are doing it as well? I wonder if I can get away with it without the wife noticing? Probably not - she uses the car to commute every day... :-(

Do you have any other aftermarket parts? Do they recommend an intake or exhaust?

I'm guessing they would be, since it's through APR, but I can't say for sure. It takes less than an hour to get installed (for me, 40 minutes from when I walked in the door to when I drove off the lot) and you can just use the tune when you're driving and put it back to stock when you're done ;)

For Stage 1, they "recommend" intake, cat-back exhaust, DV, intercooler, and some hoses, but none of those are required to meet the advertised results as per the APR website. As for my car, I've got an SRI, Muffler, lightened flywheel, and upgraded clutch (not for this, it's just what went with the flywheel). Some older 1.8Ts might need a new DV, but mine was made after they started fitting the 710N to the GTI, so I'm set there.

I have no idea what I was thinking. Not only did I double-check the key, but I also noticed that power was going down whilst torque was still increasing - and I still managed to make an idiot of myself.

Since you say 1.8T GTI, I'm assuming you're out of warranty? APR ECU tune in or out of warranty is the question I'm considering for my next car. Mk7 GTI should be able to get to 250hp on a tune alone.
