first post of a (hopefully) semi-regular (read: when I remember to) series: Tonight's subject, greatest car songs of all time. Now, I know that its been widely accepted that "highway star" or some other, similar era, big money cock rock song its the greatest car song of all time but I'm here to shatter that with 2 songs. The first of which you may be familiar with, the 2nd you probably aren't. Anyway, here goes:
Song #1: Roadrunner-The Modern Lovers
A song, first recorded in 1970, about the freedom of just going for a drive, on your own, radio on, seeing the beauty of suburban America through the rose-tinted shades of the freedom of the road, and of the soul. This was also on the mixtape I made during spring break of '10, and it quickly became the soundtrack for that summer. That first summer of freedom, with a license and a car for the first time without the burden of work or school holding me back (I got my license september of '09, missing summer break by 2 weeks). By then I was on my 3rd car (a red '01 Aurora 4.0, which having involuntarily replaced my tragically wrecked 900 Saab that spring, I had a bit of disdain for (it was also awfully unreliable), but, that summer, that last free summer, I had my friends, I had my bad decisions, and I had my red V-8 powered early 21st century american muscle-luxury sedan, and I had that song, which told me, I'm young, free, happy, with a badass ride (i replaced the mufflers with glass packs, tinted the windows, and I was THE BOMB with my big fat loud leather-lined sedan). And that summer, that last free summer, for those 3 short months, I lived the dream, and that's what this song is all about, the freedom cars provide, and the euphoric feeling of going anywhere you want with your windows down, arms hanging out, and those long, late nights that you get when you're young and independent for the first time, Speaking of first times, this brings us to Song #2
Boss Hoss- The Sonics
This song, by Tacoma, Washington's The Sonics, arguably the first "punk" sounding bands and one of the most if not THE most criminally underrated bands in the history of music, details the narrator's excitement of getting his new car, a "turn-on red" hopped up hot-rod he describes as "a real boss hoss". He goes on to brag about how awesome and fast it is, but not in an overtly douchey way. This song really captures the excitement of your first fast car, and that feeling that your car is the best car in the world, and that you are invincible. And that is translated perfectly in this song. Raw, fast, and loud, as any good car should be, this song should sit easily at the top of any gearhead's song list.
( Benjamin Rolland is a major pop culture junkie and gigantic gearhead. He writes for the sake of spreading and sharing pop culture and automotive knowledge, and if he gets published professionally, hey, cool deal. Currently 2nd in command at Feathernest furniture restorations and recyclers, and part time valets out of the sheer love of driving cars. He can be found prowling the central Jersey Shore)
