Road salt is the bane of our existence up North >_<

Edit: the white states are unknown if they use salt or not. Looking at N. Dakota lol

Would be a good idea to buy a used car driven in those states without road salt.

I've always wondered if there are feasible alternatives to salting the roads during winter...

Oh god I feel you. Salt is terrible for cars...I used to live in Ohio and I go back there every year to visit family in the winter. Its awful how much rust there is on everything. I live in TN now, which although they use salt when its snowy or icy, it usually doesn't get bad enough for them to break it out.

I like how the state with the coldest winter temperatures on record (ND) is oh-fuck-this-white, and neighboring Montana is solidly a user of grit instead. Sometimes it just doesn't pay to try to melt the snow off the road.

Salt is only effective above something like 10 or 15 degrees, so when it drops to around 0, it's pretty much useless. Sand at least helps give traction.

Some places use urea as an alternative.

I really hate salt.

Actually the source says white states are unknown. A quick google search shows they use it.

Da mass in Mass. Good lord that's a lot of salt.

Yep, which is why a lot of states honestly shouldn't bother using anything but grit. Trying to do the whole job with salt has a bad tendency to waste everyone's time if it's an area with snap temps below that and freeze/refreeze cycles.

Funny thing is, I had that as my facebook status a few winters ago when I was complaining about road salt.

It would need to actually freeze in this part of TX for us to use salt. Hell I've never seen more than a half inch of snow on the ground in the entire time I've lived in Houston (about 22 years, give or take).

4wd: no actual need to use the road when it gets snowed over and is half-salted. Maybe.

yeah they just let all the dogs go out and play in the snow, which dogs love doing

But to hoon around, get corgis, the official dog of Jalopnik/oppo

Why not stick heaters underneath the pavement or something? long rods, possibly electrical wire or something, that could be switched on when there is ice and/or snow.

Like those electric heaters with the orange glowing wires but bigger

They use all kinds of thing's in MN to fight the ice beside's the salt, some bridges have de-icing systems that pop up out of the road, They use a chemical to spray down before the snow hits too to help it not stick.
They are always testing things, but grit is best in my mind too. I will say if you get your vechicle under coated and take care of it, it is really not that bad. I have one spot on my car and that is the spot where all Jetta's get rust, top rear wheel wells. I just found out it was a recall item because this post made me look it up, guess it is time to see if I can get it repaired, sigh. I should still be under the 12 year paint warranty too. Thanks I think I see new fenders in my future.

It is safer than the alternative, which is an ice sheet. I live in Washington, and I've literally gone ice skating down my road before.
