Contestants will purchase a car for no more than $500 on the east coast, and drive it to the west coast. You can bring as many tools and spare parts as the car can hold. First one to the Pacific wins.

This would be incredible.

Am I allowed to use a Volvo 240?

I would be in too.

As long as the car I drive can make as many gas stops as possible, as the gas tank is a 5 gallon drum......And its powered by a 32 valve cobra engine....

As long as the rules are not like LeMons. Jeez, your $500 car will cost you 3-5 thousand more to get ready. What about us folks on or near the west coast? Same rules? If so, we will organize an opposite(lock) race.

First one into the Pacific wins. These aren't classics.

Car prep is up to you and what you think you need and can get away with. Floorboards, lights, etc are optional. Part of the race is getting past whatever police will be out to ruin our day, but in the end you and your co-pilot are the ones that will have to live with your decisions about what to fix and what to ignore.

The rules would go something like this:

Car must be purchased from a published source (online or newspaper). No sweetheart deals.

Once purchased, the car goes to impound, sight unseen if possible. Whatever is wrong with it will have to wait until impound opens, 24 hours before the race starts.

Impound opens, you have 24 hours to make it "safe" and "roadworthy". All tools and spares must fit in the vehicle (no trailers), so if you're bringing an engine hoist and a spare engine and trans, you should buy a big pickup truck.

Race starts. Drive as fast as you can/can get away with.

Miles accumulated on a tow truck don't count. Fix it where it breaks.

Tags and insurance are recommended.

Well then, I will buy a $500 car on the EC and have it shipped to the west. On the initial day I will leave and be there several days before anybody else.

Need to refine the rules.

I imagine finishing times measured in days, not hours. But I love the idea. What about a head to head race format, with one car going East to West and the other West to East?

Relay race class? That way people don't have to criss cross the country multiple times? You could start l.a. to phoenix and then someone else goes phoenix to dallas. Etc. Jusy get a team together to make it work
