Drove the Seven to work yesterday, the second day all week. After work, went to an in-law's to pick up the wife, who forgot I took the Seven to work... :) We went to watch a movie about 20 minutes from there (DO NOT WATCH Prisoners. I'm warning you. It's crappy, in spite of the good cast. I don't know how they got Hugh Jackman to play along with that). We got out around 10pm, and it was about 40-42F outside. I gave her the helmet and took off.
On the positive side, while we were getting ready, a few people stopped and looked at it, one kid ran over from a restaurant to take a picture, and on the way out of the parking lot, an older gentleman in a 500 Abarth stopped and said "Isn't that one of those Caterham things? That looks like a lot of fun".
Then I drove for 40 minutes at 75mph to get home. It was cold without the helmet, but if I slouch enough, I can keep my head under the wind flow from the Brooklands aeroscreen. Engine heat kept the feet warm.
Some winterization thoughts:
- Need racing gloves. Up until now, Mechanix gloves have worked ok, but the gauntlet-style racing gloves keep the wind from blowing inside my sleeves.
- Need a scarf-thing... I don't know what you call them, they are like the bottom half of a balaclava, covering the neck, chin, and have a section that tucks inside the shirt. One of those would seal out the little bit of wind that makes it between the bottom of the helmet and the top of the jacket
- I need to find some 2" heat-resistant ducting. Now I see why they use it in other race cars. I would like to route some ducting from the engine bay area around my feet, possibly the firewall, to come out right in front of the steering wheel, with 2-4" of it sticking out. That way, it would be able to be aimed at the hands, face, or lap. I would also facilitate caps for the summer.
Oh well. I'll put it on my to-do list for this winter.

Goggles, you need driving goggles to go with that driving scarf you'll be purchasing.

I ride a motorcycle daily to school rear-round so I've had to go through this same weatherization problem.
For gloves in the winter I use a pair of Deerskin gauntlet gloves. Very warm, very comfortable, but I live in Texas so the cold I have to deal with is probably nothing in comparison to wherever you live.

And as for the scarf-thing I think what you're looking for is a snood. I had to get one of these as well for the gap between the bottom of my full-face helmet and top of my jacket's collar.

Its very tempting, nut the car itself isn't very period correct. I want to have my helmet repainted to look like Senna's...
