You would need a charging station that can put out 3.7 Million watts to charge a car as quickly as gasoline can fill a tank! (That accounts for 29% thermal efficiency for Gas engines)

Also current batteries are shit. NEC just announced a new type of Li-Ion battery that stores 1.7 x the energy of previous batteries, and it's still 14x less energy dense than gasoline!

It's this that's keep electric cars from working.

Just did a quick calc: The Hoover Dam could charge 562 cars simultaneously at its maximum capacity.

I didn't see your original discussion, but reasons you mention here are part of what I love about my Volt. Although they did a hell of a lot to protect the battery. Very strict thermal management and charging limitations. 8 yr 100K mile warranty on the battery and electrics associated for max of 30% loss in range. And in CA they are required to warranty for 10 years 150K! The 40 mile EV range doesn't bother me a bit, and I manage to average 75% electric driving.
