Well.. they made campers for Saabs
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toppola
So a 1/4 ton truck should not be a problem? :)

It's just that one would think the weight of a camper of any kind would be nigh-on 500lb, let alone a single person or two. It's not even the rear springs that make me raise an eyebrow - it's that the Ranchero doesn't have anything tying front and back frames together. Going out camping only to fold the truck in half seems... interesting.
A full conversion with heavier springs and frame joiners (like a Falcon 4-door wagon or some sedan deliveries) would make some margin of sense.

The Toppola for a Saab was about 115kg (254lbs) :)

The Turnpike kit for a Ranchero looks like it weighed roughly double, so call it right on the margin. I'd imagine a static load of 500 + 350lb or so of camping individual(s) and gear would be sort of okay on something able to handle 500 on the road, but even so, yikes. Still not as bad as this, though:
The '64 in Goldfinger allegedly carrying a whole cubed 5000lb+ Lincoln...

Hehe, the US has always had a thing for "make things as heavy as can be" right? Here in Europe we've been more about "how can we make this lighter.. but more complex ;P
But yeah... that pic from Goldfinger... nawh... don't make no sense :)

Interestingly, the Ranchero itself was against the grain in the weight sense - the whole vehicle only weighs a little over a ton. It's very simply built as well, which is one reason it was at one time the cheapest pickup available in the country. The US Falcon in general was made in a brief period in which modern body techniques allowed for very light weight and the onslaught of the Beetle and others had the Big Three thinking they'd have to play the lightweight game to keep up.
Making a pickup off the Falcon at roughly the exact same time as the chicken tax struck the offerings of VW and others, and that Chevy still built the El Camino on a mid-size meant that the Falcon Ranchero was effectively alone in its niche.

Well, you live and learn. I did not know that about the Falcon Ranchero.

It's one reason I got so set on getting one . :)
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Very similar platform to an early Mustang and lightweight - but with a pickup bed and what I feel is more attractive styling. Should go like hell once I install the Rover V-8 with ITBs.
