and I'm not shooting the messenger (that would be you). But you're the conduit we have into the Kinja brain trust. And this format doesn't work for Oppo. Oppo's been about photos for as long as I've been here. And this format is terrible for photos. We don't need small photos for 'density' as Hardigree said. The majority of users don't want 'density'...we want big photos we can see.
Pass it up the command chain if you'd be so kind....thanks.

How do you think the guys over on the photography focused Kinja blog feel? (actually there hasn't been any bitching there, but I suspect that it's because they're not as frequented as Oppo)

Thank you, and I will.
In the mean time, maybe the Oppo admins could be more liberal with recommends, to embiggen images on the front page? Admin recommends open up a lot of cool possibilities, especially when coupled with insets/related articles. I'm going to create an example post on Photography over the weekend (hopefully), and will share it onto Oppo if you guys are interested.

It's really weird to be browsing Photography with the redesign. And I haven't a clue on how to use the new mod layout.

The funny thing is most of us didn't have many damns about it, it happened and you move on.
Large images are still possible, larger images through enough recommends even more so. This is the exact same thing the FP has had, I don't recall burning of the Town Square when they changed over...

Bear in mind that Ernie is the
OWNER
of the Photography blog here. He's the guy who created it. I think if there is a person who is with us on the big pictures are better bandwagon, it's probably him. But, let's see how this goes. We'll adjust, we've survived more changes than I can count.
Also, there is no final version of this platform. Just ever changing (mostly forward) progress.

Do you know why, about 50% of the time, when I recommend something, it doesn't enlarge the lede picture? I've encountered this much more recently. I wonder if I am the only one, or if it's a new algorithm?

And it's not even consistent. Which is the weirdest part. Here's a screen shot of the current oppo page. I have personally recommended three different posts, the dubai photo dump, the perfect datsun 240z, and the Gaiz - BMW car porn picture. Here are three captures, 10 minutes after recommendation of all three of them, each capture spaced 1 minute apart.
It's really weird. Figured you should know.

Thanks for coming by Ernie, I'm sure you expected a level of freak-out today so it was nice for you to drop in and listen. Please share that post to Oppo once it is completed. Like you said, there are some cool features and once we get accustomed to them every thing will be o.k.

That is weird. Can you ping me with a reminder to look into this on Monday? If you do some recommending this weekend, try to make note if the behavior is similarly erratic.

Not a problem, that's what I'm here for. Grab my attention if you guys have any questions, or send a note to our help desk which is staffed by a few guys who I would go to war with 10 times outta 10.

So I already sent you my main gripes with the mobile editor, primary being the loss of a thumbnail when I insert an image. Now some good news and bad news, good news is I can "manage Oppositelock" from mobile which I could not do in the past. The option was there but it would just freeze up. Tonight I was able to add a new user but it took forever to load the "members" screen and type bar for input. And by forever I mean several minutes each, which as you know in "Internet Time" is an eternity. Anyway, I'm sure you folks are working on it. :)

I would think that the lack of riots on the FP change over might have a lot to do with the fact that the vast majority of us can't post on the FP...that the FP content is more or less presented to us while on Oppo the community creates the content and has a feeling of ownership thereof. At least that's the way I feel. I put up that railroad grade crossing piece today because I wanted Opponauts to read it and to see what it's like from the railroad engineer's point of view. I wanted to share, to contribute, to put up something else besides my usual goofball gifs because I feel like I'm a part of Oppo and need to share real content. I've never felt that way about the FP. I'd want to be an admin on Oppo, to help out where possible...because I feel that real sense of ownership.
As an aside no, I don't much like the layout on the FP and as such visit it once or twice a day. It's cluttered and damned hard on middle aged eyes peering thru progressive eyeglass lenses and as such is my reality I'd rather scroll thru bigger images than squint at smaller ones.

Thanks Ernie. As an aside no, I don't much like this layout on the FP either and as such visit it once or twice a day. It's cluttered and rather hard on middle aged eyes peering thru progressive eyeglass lenses and since this eyesight is my reality I'd rather scroll thru bigger images than squint at smaller ones.

The problem is your desire to 'own' content on Oppo and help curate it is just giving Nick Denton free content to earn money with, we get none of the backends for creating some of the awesome stuff we do.
At this point I'd rather open up my own blog, share to here, have it shared to FP, and at least see some ad and click revenue out of the work that gets done.
The true intent of Oppo was murdered a long time ago, this is just a monetized place without the ads.

You know, I wasn't gonna there... :)
But why would Denton would want your blog shared on the FP? You're taking eyeballs away from him...he wants eyeballs on his blogs, not yours.

Sorry Ernie, one more thing. From mobile I used to be able to share a post to my personal blog. This was a great way to view posts later that I could comment on or just enjoy without them being lost in a sea of comments that I made. That feature, on mobile, seems to have disappeared, or it went somewhere else and I can't find it.

Hey, it's still possible. At the top right of any permalink (between byline and headline) there's a share icon. Click that, then click 'Share to Kinja'. The default share destination will be your personal blog. You can just save without adding any text, and it will function like a share in the previous design. Note however that there's a bug which unsharing at the moment.

Thanks that " share to Kinja" threw me off, I didn't want to send stuff to Kinja's main page.

The enlarging from moderator recommends still seems to be acting funny and unpredictable. I tested quite a bit on Friday evening and the results were very odd, and in some cases, multiple moderators recommended posts and they still were not enlarged (but had photo's which should have, by my understanding, been enlarged).
Was there a change to the system for this? Is it now algorithm based? I'm rather busy at work today, but wanted to let you know that the odd recommend/enlarge behavior has not yet been totally determined.

I'm not in the office today, so nailing it down remotely will be tough. I can tell you that nothing should have changed - images >640 should splash when recommended by an admin.
I'll be back in the office tomorrow, and will look into it further.

Enjoy whatever time you have out of the office. I think you picked a great day to "accidentally" wander out of reception range and enjoy whatever the great outdoors has to offer.
It'll still be here tomorrow (hopefully). =)

I've seen other weird behavior regarding the enlarging of posts, I posted something yesterday with two pictures, and both appeared on oppo, without any recommendations, and one was enlarged, and the other was not.
See here for more. I have the original files I used to create the post if you want me to try to replicate the behavior on my personal blog or elsewhere (or I could provide them to you).
