I had a comment from EL_ULY. In it he used the word "preventative" which made me wonder which is correct "preventative" or "preventive". Deep thought for a Friday.

Preventative, unless you mean a condom.

Taking a wild guess here, one more commonly an adjective (i.e. something is a prevent at ive) and the other more commonly an adverb (i.e. an action is preventive in nature). Maybe. Regardless, which is used would vary greatly by location.
I'm basing my guess on other words that vary in similar, but not identical ways: e.g. preserving/preservative.
