Just realized that the door-closing sound on the Land-Rover Series in the SyFy show Haven is correct. Either they went completely mike-crazy, or the sound guy is dedicated beyond belief.

I work in production, and I can guarantee any sound guy worth anything would try to get that sound while on set.

I'm fairly confident a lot of the foley is being re-done on the show: minutes later, there was a pretty clear re-dub for back doors on an e-series van and "walking on porch" sounds.
It's a fairly unique door-close sound, because it's a striker latch (not a rotary) until a ways into the Series III. With the exterior brass ball hinges and a slide door stop, they can often be heard faintly, and the upper section of the door being supported on pins sometimes makes a slightly different "whump" against the weatherstripping than the lower. There's also often a faint clunk from the slide windows.
Yeah, I think the sound guy would be quite happy adding it to his collection regardless.

They'll do both. It's actually two separate teams. The on set guys will try to get everything they can. Sometimes the real sound doesn't actually sound good and they'll replace it. You're right, I'm sure if it sounds as unique as you describe it, they took special care to get it.
Then there's a different post team. The post team will have a library of sounds to work from. Some stuff they buy as an existing library, and some stuff they'll record on their own. They just re-paved the roads around my apartment, and since it's LA, it happened in the middle of the night. I was walking down the street and passed a sound guy just hanging out recording construction noise...
